Donna’s Obituary
On November 26, 2021, Donna Marilyn (Drake) Ferguson died peacefully and surrounded by love in her home in Bayhead (Tatamagouche), Nova Scotia. Born in Truro, Nova Scotia on May 6, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Barrie Drake and Ruby Ellen (Foster, Drake) Hatfield. In addition to being a key part of the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital administration team for many years, Donna was a farmer and co-owner of Kilkerran Farms; loving wife; patient mother; proud grandmother and great grandmother; caring sister; adoring niece, cousin and aunt; fun and fast friend; and good neighbour. Donna was also an active and committed community volunteer over the years, notably with the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Bayhead Union Church. Donna enjoyed road trips, dancing, music, game shows, cards, puzzles, and reading. In addition to having a way with numbers, there was nary a crossword puzzle that stumped her for long. While she initially enjoyed gardening and would have loved a rosebush or two, she gave up after many years of losing to foes from tires to goats. With the many hats she wore in life, Donna had an uncanny ability to stretch time, meals, and a penny. Like her late husband, Doug, Donna spent many hours at the Truro Raceway and other racetracks around the Maritime provinces. Also, like Doug, Donna enjoyed the comradery and sportsmanship within the standardbred horseracing community. The many people that loved, liked, and respected Donna would say that she will be well remembered for her common sense, quick wit, sense of humour, patience, and welcoming home. Donna was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Douglas Wren Ferguson. Left to mourn and share wonderful stories and happy memories are her six children, Heather (Steven Bowes), Ellen (Darren) Todd, Barrie (Kim), Martha, Andrew, Janet (John) Legge; grandchildren Arathana, Elliot, Piper, Amy, Taylor, Simone, Kelsey, Jennie, Jesse, Caelan, Delaney, Logan, Caeden, Foster, and Adelaide; great grandchild, little Wren; brother Bill (Audrey) Drake; sisters Karen (Ed) Corah and Kathy (Ron) Hoyt, Aunt Ponnie (Pauline) Carter; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and dear friends and neighbours. Donna also leaves her trusty girl and favorite child since 2016, Omama, her adopted dog from Nunavut. Donna’s family will be forever grateful to the Pugwash and Tatamagouche hospital teams, the VON, the palliative care team, Shelly MacDonald, Brenda Garrison, Debbie Farrell, Angela Ferguson, and her many other supports and extended family that made her days brighter and kept her comfortably pampered in her Bayhead home. Visitation will be held from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, November 30th in the Bayhead Community Hall, 421 Hwy. 6, Bayhead (Tatamagouche). Proof of Double vaccination and mask wearing will be required to attend the visitation period. A private service will be held later with interment in Union Church Cemetery, Bayhead. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Bayhead Union Church, Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital Foundation or your local hospital foundation would be appreciated.
