Diane Diane (Sinclair) Smith
It is with profound sadness and considered relief that we announce the passing of Diane, our loving and devoted mother and friend to all whose lives she touched, on April 29th, 2021. She left us peacefully while at her residence in Halifax just a few weeks after her 90th birthday.
Born in Halifax to the late Francis and George Sinclair, Diane grew up in Fairview and received her primary education from The Convent of the Sacred Heart School before attending and graduating from Dalhousie University. Although her first interest was social work, Diane’s path led her to the teaching profession where she became a fixture at Dartmouth High School for nearly three decades. Much of that time known to the students and colleagues affectionately as Squeaky.
Mom was most gratified with her work at D.H.S. in her role as Student Council Advisor which enabled her to guide and impact the lives of students well beyond their academic curriculum. So many former students will recall her being ever present at the school dances and many other special events that she so readily extended herself for in order to make happen for them.
Diane’s work as a community leader to support Dartmouth youth and those less fortunate throughout her lifetime came naturally to her. Her selflessness and courage, her sense of fairness and of responsibility to others were values she instilled in her children and framed her entire professional and personal life. She demonstrated that mighty tasks can come from small packages. She was especially proud of her longstanding relationship and association with the Dartmouth Police community.
She was predeceased by her husband Peter, with whom she became a devoted mother to her four children: Lisa, who predeceased her, Derek (Laurie), Lynn (Dave) and Kevin (Beth). Proud grandmother to Jason (Jenny), Ryan, Allison, Spencer (Caitlin), Callum (Eilish), Madison and great grandmother to Logan, Clara and Abigail.
Her sassy attitude, strength, independence and love for all will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace Mom, Nanny. We Love You!
There will be no public services in honor of Diane’s passing but we welcome your expression of condolence and sharing of tributes or stories by visiting www.dartmouthfuneralhome.ca
