Obituary of David Allen De La Matter
David Allen De La Matter of Cannington, Ontario passed away peacefully at the Caressant Care Nursing Home in Lindsay, Ontario on Saturday, April 3rd, 2021 in his 80th year.
David was a retired dairy farmer. Predeceased by his parents John Stanley De La Matter and Jessie Winnifred De La Matter (nee Allen), and step-mother Phyllis De La Matter (nee Beirness-Taylor). He is survived and lovingly remembered by his brother Doug (Shirley Hill) of Barry’s Bay, Ontario, niece Katherine De La Matter, sister-in-law Joanne De La Matter (nee Symington), step-sisters Marilyn Woolston (late Larry) and Shirley McDowell (Larry), numerous cousins and friends.
When David was a teenager, his family moved from Toronto to a farm near Altona, Ontario and David took to the farming life right away. After learning the ways of agriculture, the family soon began raising purebred Guernsey cattle and sending the milk to Toronto. Around 1970, the family moved to a bigger farm on Side-road 17 north of Sunderland, Ontario where a larger herd of Holstein cattle supplied milk to even more families. After a full career of farming, David retired to Cannington, Ontario and learned to enjoy photography, exploring the world on his computer and chatting to merchants on his weekly rounds.
The toll of a lifetime of hard work started to show on his body and prompted a move to the Caressant Care Retirement Home on Mary St. in Lindsay in 2014. After a few years of sharing happy times with other retirees, his physical health declined further and required a move to the Nursing Home section. He received three years of attentive care by the staff who went out of their way to help him enjoy life, in spite of his declining mobility. On Saturday, April 3rd, 2021 his gentle soul passed away with caring staff by his side.
For everyone who knew David, the memories he leaves us with will always provoke a smile.
Private arrangements entrusted to the Thorne Funeral Home in Cannington (705-432-2672). Interment Cedar Vale Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
