KAJIURA, David (Dave) Akio
Of Heritage Green Nursing Home, formerly of Caledonia, Ontario. Dave died peacefully and quietly of natural causes (not COVID related) on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at the age of 94. Born on August 23, 1927 in Haney (now Maple Ridge), British Columbia, Dave was one of eight children born to Makiji Kajiura and Sumano Morita, both from the Okayama prefecture in Japan. He attended school at Alexander Robinson Public School in Haney. During World War II, he was relocated with his family to the Japanese internment camp at Popoff in the interior of British Columbia. After the war he moved with his family to St. Catherines, Ontario, then spent some time as a patient at the Hamilton Mountain Sanatorium where he met his future wife, Audrey Okimi. In 1954, Dave and Audrey were married. They lived in Hamilton, Greensville, and eventually settled in Caledonia, Ontario. Dave and Audrey had three sons: Richard (Rick), adopted son Kevin who died in infancy, and adopted son, Stephen. Their family grew when Rick married Robyn Willis and they had two daughters, Kylie and Karina. Their family continued to grow when Stephen married Marianne Porter and they had a son, Brian. Dave was predeceased by his wife of 49 years who died in 2003. He was also predeceased by his sister, Marie and brother-in-law, Iwao (Ed) Itakura, brother, Hiroshi and sister-in-law, Eva, sister Ruth and brother-in-law, Toyoshi Hiramatsu and brother, Yutaka. He is survived by his sons, Rick and Stephen and their families. He is also survived by his brother, Sam and sister-in-law, Joanne; and brother, Benny and sister-in-law, Sylvia. He is an uncle to many nieces and nephews. For many years Dave hosted his mother-in-law in his home along with his young family. He was a gardener and landscaper and brought beauty to others through his work. He had a knack for rescuing dying plants. He was creative, curious, and resourceful. He enjoyed making things that made people smile. He was an active member of the Heritage Green and Hamilton Mountain Seventh-day Adventist Churches where he served as deacon for many years. He enjoyed ice hockey, which he played into his 70s, and table tennis, which he played into his 80s, after which he took up pool, golf and lawn bowling. He loved going out for doughnuts with grand-kids, taking photos, enjoying good food and root beer, and spending time with friends and family. Visiting will take place in the Miller Funeral Chapel, Caledonia, on Sunday, December 19, 2021 from 2p.m. – 4p.m. The service will be held in the Heritage Green Seventh-Day Adventist Church (349 Isaac Brock Dr, Stoney Creek, ON), followed by interment in Caledonia Cemetery.
