Obituary For Darren Alan McCann
September 3, 1960 – July 12, 2021
It is with heavy hearts and much love that we announce the passing of Darren McCann, much too soon, at the age of 60.
Darren was born in Lethbridge but raised in Edmonton. He attended Lynnwood Elementary, Stratford Junior High and then Jasper Place High School, where he made many life-long friendships. He then went on to earn a Marketing Diploma from N.A.I.T. in 1982. Darren moved to Grande Prairie in the late 90’s where, for 20 years, he worked as a sales manager in the oil and gas industry. He loved his work and enjoyed living in and travelling throughout the area. Darren was a voracious reader, a book a night was not uncommon and he loved sports both watching and participating. He was an accomplished hockey player in his youth and became an avid curler in later years. However, Darren’s real passion was golf. He just loved everything about the game. While he played many courses through the years, none was as special to him as The Dunes Golf Club in Grande Prairie. For 20 years he was a member and the staff and the other members became his second family. It was at The Dunes that he not only made many wonderful friendships but was Senior’s Classic Champion in 2016 and got his first hole in one in 2020.
Darren loved his family and he never missed a holiday get together or celebration. He will be forever loved and greatly missed by his mom, Joan, sister, Shaunda, George, Danny, Drew, and Danielle. His Lethbridge family, Aunty Marg, Rochelle, Russel, Paige, Ken, Nevyn, and Shaelyn, his best friend, Kolleen Paches, his special long time golf buddies, Daryl DuBois, Dave Bernier and Mike Bonagofski as well as the many friends he made throughout the years. Darren was predeceased by his dad, Al, in 2015.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the nurses of 5 North, at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, who took such special care of Darren in his final days.
It was Darren’s wish that no formal celebration be held.
Darren lived life to its very fullest and definitely on his own terms. He loved people, had a wonderful sense of humour and was kind and generous to everyone. We are all better for having known him.
