Birthplace: Outremont, Québec, Canada Birthdate: November 26, 1933 Date of death: February 3, 2021 It is with sadness that we announce the death of Claude André Lanctôt on February 3rd, 2021. The son of the late Raymond Lanctôt and the late Marthe Dubuc, he was 87 years old. Claude will be missed by his four daughters and their respective spouses and families – Claire Lanctôt and Nasser Boumenna (Djamel, Tarek, Imad, Yamina) of Stanbridge East, Québec; Thérèse and Andrew Zuranski (Elizabeth, Patrick, Bernadette and Alex Zigarevich with Ignatius, Gregory) of Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania; Elizabeth and Scott Jelstrom (Audrey, Brennan, Thomas, William) of Albany, New York; and Anne-Marie Lanctôt and Javier Llanos (Sandra, Sylvana, Gabriela) of Pierrefonds, Québec. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Anne; his brother Raymond; and one grandchild, Maria Kateri Zuranski. He is survived by his siblings Marie, Anne, Louise, Pierre, Rita, José and Guy. Claude completed his medical studies at McGill University in 1957. In 1963, he married his wife of 50 years, the late Anne Evans Lanctôt, following a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Chicago. Subsequent studies included post-doctoral studies at Yale New Haven Medical School and a Master’s degree in Public Health at Harvard University. Claude returned to Québec in 1970 where he joined the Faculty of Medicine of the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke (CHUS). In 1973, he founded the International Federation for Family Life Promotion (IFFLP), an NGO active in family life education (FLE) and natural family planning (NFP). In 1978, Claude moved to Washington, DC in order to access better funding to support what would become his life’s work. By the late 90s, IFFLP funding dried up; already in his mid-sixties, Claude returned to the practice of medicine as a family physician, and to Quebec in 2003. In 2007, a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s led to his full professional retirement. Claude will be remembered for his insatiable curiosity, his warm smile and his quiet attentiveness. He and his wife Anne were known for their generous hospitality. A deeply religious man, he showed profound respect for all fellow human beings and their beliefs. He practiced simplicity and humility in his everyday life and inspired many others to do the same. The family offers their thanks to the staff of the Farnham Long-Term Residential Care Centre who cared for Claude over the past 3 years. In Claude’s memory, the family welcomes contributions to the Alzheimer Society of Canada (alzheimer.ca/en) or the US Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org/), as well as to national chapters of Caritas Internationalis such as Development & Peace (www.devp.org/fr) in Canada or Catholic Relief Services (www.crs.org/) in the US.
