Obituary of Christene Thompson
Jean Christene Thompson (nee MacInnes)
On Oct. 3 1919, at their family farm in Glencoe, Annie and Alex MacInnes joyously welcomed the birth of their second daughter, Jean Christene. Allene, her big sister was
delighted to have a playmate.
In 2021, on June 14, in her 102nd year, Christene passed away peacefully at Glen Haven Manor.
In that happy farm home on the “East River”, two additional daughters, Elizabeth and Beulah would join Allene and Christene. The “MacInnes sisters” were the epitome of loving siblings. They had an unbreakable bond throughout their lives, they worked together, supported and encouraged each other.
Christene had an entrepreneurial spirit and trained as a hair dresser. At the age of 17 she established her own “beauty shop” in Stellarton. She had a thriving business and was honoured to be a member of the Nova Scotia Hairdresser’s Association inaugural examining board. Following an early retirement Christene entered her second career and enjoyed working in the hotel industry.
Christene could turn her hand to anything from fixing a faucet to elegant needlework and embroidery. She enjoyed curling and was an enthusiastic “Toronto Blue Jays” fan.
Christene was warm hearted, had a good sense of humour and a quick wit. She was an outgoing conversationalist and enjoyed keeping in touch with a plethora of cousins across North America.
Her terrific memory, which she maintained until the end, had an encyclopedic index of everything from baseball to family history. She was a keen bridge player and loved doing daily crossword puzzles which she often collaborated on with her sister Elizabeth.
Christene was a woman of prayer and faith and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton. The happiest day of her life was her marriage to her husband, Jim Thompson. She became the stepmother to Bette, stepmother-in-law to Ross, and step grandmother to their son Mark who survive her. Christene loved them and enjoyed their company immensely. Their devotion and love to her has touched us all.
Christene will be deeply missed by her younger sister and best friend, Elizabeth who loved her dearly as did her nieces, Anne (David) and their son Andrew and Arla (Fred) and their son Michael (Jennifer) and their son, her great-grand nephew, Sage.
Christene was predeceased by her husband, parents, sisters, Allene and Beulah, brothers-in-law, Arthur, Ronald and Frank.
Christene’s life will be honoured at a private family graveside service to be held at a later date. The family is deeply grateful to the amazing staff at Glen Haven Manor for their loving care and compassion to Christene.
We ask that as you remember Christene to hold her in your hearts and that we all show compassion, gratitude, and kindness to one another. It is the way which she lived and would wish to be remembered.
