Cherry died peacefully, and surrendered into the arms of God, surrounded by family, at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s. She was predeceased by her loving husband, James J. Greene, Q.C., in November 2014, by her parents, John (Jack) and Niny (Cotton) Midwood and her sister-in-law, Tessa (Robertson) Midwood. Cherry’s children, grandchildren and great grandchild were the light of her life. She leaves to mourn her children Michael (Marilyn Dodge), Marie-Louise, Bernard (Joanne Faour), Joseph (Donna Simms), Elizabeth (Ronald Whitten), James (Lori Sullivan), Randal (Sharon Ormiston) and Jennifer (Patrick Bavis). Also left with fond memories are her twelve grandchildren, Melanie Greene, Juliana Pierri (Dominic Pierri), Wesley Holmes, Dominic Greene, Victoria Whitten, Danielle Greene, Katherine Greene, Kent Whitten, Graham Greene, Maria Whitten, Peter Bavis and Henry Bavis. She had looked forward to meeting her first great grandchild, Matteo Pierri, of Port Coquitlam, B.C., whom she had not yet met due to the pandemic. Also left with beautiful memories are Cherry’s brother, James Midwood of Lechlade-on-Thames, England, and his children, Mark, Claire, Stephen and Frances and their families.
Cherry was born in Eastbourne, England on February 24th, 1933. She spent her early years in London and at school at Loreto College in Llandudno, Wales, to which children were evacuated in 1940 when wartime bombing of London occurred during the Battle of Britain. She met Jim, the love of her life, while he and her brother James were students at Oxford. At the age of 20, she married Jim in London, at St. Mary’s Church, Hamstead. From there, they began an amazing adventure, traveling in Cornwall and Devon and then aboard the Caronia, from Southampton to New York, where they honeymooned, to begin their married life in St. John’s, Newfoundland. As Cherry and Jim raised their large family, love and laughter abounded at their home on Monkstown Road and their summer home at Topsail Pond. Consistent with her interest in spirituality and the search for God, Cherry was involved in many volunteer and religious groups over the years, including the Catholic Women’s League, the Mercy Associates, the Gathering Place and the Janeway Hospital.
The family expresses special thanks to Cherry’s long-time doctor, Dr. Mercedes Penton, her caregivers Denise Hiscock and Tracey Whittle, the 4th floor staff at Tiffany Village, where she had resided for the past six years, and medical and nursing staff in the Emergency Department and 4SA, along with Fr. Francis Roche of the pastoral team, at the Health Sciences Centre.
