Obituary of Celina Mary Cook
It is with appreciation for a life well lived that the family of Celina “Tena” Cook of Saint John, beloved wife of the late Joseph M. Cook announce her passing which occurred peacefully on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at the Loch Lomond Village. A lifelong resident of Saint John, she was born on June 6, 1926 to the late Damas and Celina (Gaudet) DeRoche. Celina was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mom was born in Saint John but spent her early years in Miscouche, PE, where she received her first communion at St. John the Baptist Church when she was seven. She returned to Saint John and later met Joe when she was 15, they were together until his passing in 2003.
For several years, Celina was a member of Glenview United Church, where she was active with the UCW, a member of the Jolly 17 Club and the Glenview Tuesday Morning Bowling Club, as well as a Sunday School teacher for many years. Returning to her Catholic roots, Celina became a member of St. Anne’s Parish and her faith always brought her great peace and comfort.
Celina enjoyed square dancing with the Starlight Promenaders and was a member of the Park Avenue Hall TOPS program. Most of all, she the times spent with those she loved and especially looked forward to the many camping and trailering adventures along with summers spent with Joe and loved ones at the family camp in Cambridge Narrows. She always held these special memories close to her heart.
Celina will be lovingly remembered by her four sons, Malcolm J. (Barb) of Quispamsis, David M. of Saint John, Larry J. (Bobbi) of Utopia and Stephen A. (Jennifer) of Saint John; eight grandchildren, Jocelynn, Jennifer, Candace, Lisa, Allissa, Joseph, Nicholas and Megan; 11 great-grandchildren, Kenzie, Ainslee, Conner, Rowan, Rebecca, Callie, Michael, Jack, Hudson, Wyatt and Nolan; two great-great-grandchildren, Marissa and Mason; special goddaughter, Jean Marie Dardis of Ontario; along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Linda; infant grandson, Christopher; sisters, Josephine Frost, Helen March, Ina Rackley and Little Helen who passed at the age of five; as well as brothers, Henry, Mark, Leonard, Ernest and a brother in infancy, Damas.
Mom always wanted a daughter and we would like to acknowledge her adopted daughters at the Loch Lomond Village.
Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no visitation or funeral mass. Interment will take place at a later date in Ocean View Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
