91 years of making the world a better place for anyone in her presence, that was Catherine Cann. It is with great sadness that we announce her passing on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Catherine Margaret Cann was born in Donkin, Cape Breton to the late Angus and Mabel MacLeod. She had three sisters, Mary Troke, Isabel Troke and Agnes Martell and three brothers, John, Philip and Donald MacLeod.
Catherine was predeceased by her loving husband of 67 years, Garfield. They made many wonderful memories with family and friends. She absolutely adored her grandchildren, Julie and Andrew and always looked forward to spending time with them and making memories out on the Mira.
Wherever she was, Catherine lit up the room, always filling it with love, laughter and warmth. She could often be seen with a big smile on her face, especially when she was with her family and loved ones. Catherine loved to play the violin and dance even after a hip replacement. Family members might expect a call from Catherine on their birthday, which included a rendition of happy birthday on the violin. Catherine said her prayers every night and most likely, she said one just for you.
She was a huge fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, often staying up until 1a.m. to watch the games and she’d be sure to tell you the next day all about it, especially if they won. Catherine loved to socialize, was quick-witted and had a great sense of humour. She enjoyed cryptoquotes, word scrambles and politics and if you didn’t taste her cooking and baking, you should have.
Catherine had a green thumb and tended to her garden and plants with love and dedication just as she did with people and pets. She knew how to make things grow and flourish by always providing a little extra TLC. Catherine was a lifetime member of the ACW, as well as a canvasser for various charities.
Later in life, she was lucky enough to find love with Leo, her companion until her passing. Leo made Catherine so very happy. A special thank you to the Carter family for all the care and kindness you provided.
A special thank you to her niece, Vivian Morrison for everything she did for her Aunt Catherine. Also, thank you to the doctors and nurses in the CBRH Units 4A and 4E for making sure Catherine’s short illness with cancer was treated with compassion, care and kindness.
Catherine leaves behind her son, Roger; daughter-in-law, Susan Spellman Cann; grandchildren, Julie and Andrew; sisters, Mary and Isabel; companion, Leo Carter and family; as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws, family and friends of whom she thought the world.
A private service will be held at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, Louisbourg. Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions, there will be no public visitation.
In lieu of flowers, treat others with kindness and loving care. Please donate to a charity of your choice as Catherine did her whole life.
