Williams, Bruce Dennis – Age 81, of Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2021.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Margaret (Dorrington), his sons Bruce Jr (Diane), Darryl (Tracy) and Scott. Bruce has three grandchildren, Darryl Jr, Ashley and Taylor and four great grandchildren, Jai’lyn, Jasmine, AJ and Carter. He is the son of the late Arthur E and Lydia M Williams of Lower Sackville. He is also survived by brothers Alfred (Faye), Ernest, Gary (Jane) and sisters Maxine, and Deborah. He is predeceased by brothers Edward, Robert and sister Judy.
Bruce’s life in the work of the Church began at an early age through Sunday School and then at the age of 16, in 1956, he was baptized. In October 1969 he became a Deacon of the Cobequid Road Baptist Church. At the age of 18, he became the President of his local Men’s Brotherhood at Cobequid Road and at 23, he became the Chairperson of District #2 of the African United Baptist Association (AUBA). In 1974, he held the position of Key Man for the Men’s Brotherhood at Cobequid Road. Within the Laymen’s Council of the AUBA, he had held past positions as Secretary and President.
During the many years of his work for the Lord, Deacon Bruce held the position of Sunday School Superintendent for a number of years,Church Clerk for 14 years, Chairperson of the Deacons” Board, and as a member of the Visitation Committee.
Deacon Bruce was recognized for his years of dedication to the Church, recipient of Rev. Dr. W. P. Oliver Award for outstanding service to the African Nova Scotia Community, Award of Recognition for serving 51 years as Deacon of Cobequid Road United Baptist Church, and Certificate of Recognition for his dedication and service for positions held on the Laymen’s Executive Council and Committees.
Bruce graduated from the Halifax Regional Vocational School as a mechanic, the love of cars stayed with him throughout his life. He started at Engine Repairs, Esso Car Clinic in Halifax and Dartmouth, later the owner of Bruce Williams Engine Repairs and later a gas station in Bedford, and finally retiring from CN, only to operate his business from home. Years later he returned to work at Canadian Tire parts counter.
His community interests lay in working with young people, coaching baseball and serving as leader of the 2nd Sackville Cub Pack and Boy Scouts.
Bruce loved music. He spent his younger years playing guitar in various bands. He enjoyed his love of music playing in the Cobequid Road United Baptist Church choir. His love of music stayed with him throughout his life.
The family would like to thank Dr Colin Davey, Dr Lori Wood, Barbara Stewart (Palliative Care), the Shoppers Drug Mart Sunnyside Mall, and the staff of VON and Homecare.
Funeral will be 1;00 PM Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Lucasville Baptist Church; due to COVID-19 restrictions, by invitation only. Burial will follow, 2:00 PM at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lower Sackville.
