We are very sad to announce that Brigitte Neumann died peacefully on November 4, 2021, after suffering a serious stroke. She was born in Neuötting, Bavaria, Germany on June 7, 1946 to Hans and Emma Neumann who predeceased her. She was beloved mother to Adrian Neumann; sister to Hans Albert and Christian Neumann; sister-in-law to Iveth Neumann; and aunt to Anita Balsewicz (Neumann) and David Neumann. In 1955, the Neumann family immigrated to Canada, first living in Orillia then in Midland, Ont. After graduating in Sociology from the Universities of Toronto and York, and starting her career in Ontario, Brigitte relocated to Halifax. She was much-loved by many people, and quietly made valuable contributions in many different spheres. She was passionate in her work for women’s equality and inclusiveness for all. As Director of the Nova Scotia Women’s Directorate 1988-1996, then Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women 1996-2009, she worked to achieve fair pay and pensions, safety in homes and communities, good health and well-being and an inclusive society. Her volunteer activities included: President, Nova Scotia Women’s Liberal Commission (“Add Women, Change Politics”); Chair, Order of Nova Scotia Selection Committee; Established the “Bread and Roses” scholarship with NSCC Foundation (now the WINS Bursary); Hosting meditation programs at the Halifax Shambhala Centre; Board member and Chair of her housing co-op.
