It is with heavy hearts that the family of Brian MacLean announce his sudden passing at the age of 91 on April 30, 2021 at the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born Sept 3, 1929 in Sydney Mines, he was the only child of John and Miriam (Clark) MacLean. Brian’s father died when Brian was 14 years of age. His mother worked in fish processing and for many years operated Airlie, a large bed and breakfast inn.
Brian graduated from Acadia with a BA in geology. In 1953 he began working as a geologist with the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa. In 1966 he transferred with the Survey to the Bedford Institute in Halifax. Marine Geology was his life’s work. Formally retiring at age 68, he continued on as an Emeritus Scientist until his passing. Brian authored and collaborated on numerous scientific papers. He particularly liked his geological work in the Arctic and Greenland. Over his career there were several site visits; the last was a 6 week project in Greenland when he was 80 years of age. He enjoyed many research surveys aboard the CSS Hudson in the Arctic and the CSS Kapuskasing off the coast of Nova Scotia.
Brian took up the sport of curling when living in Ottawa. He passed on a love of that game to his children and grandchildren. For several years Brian volunteered with the Red Cross. A hobby carpenter, he had a very large collection of saws and tools and built the family cottage.
Brian is survived by his daughter Ann MacDiarmid (Robert), Moncton NB and his son Stuart (Carole) of Dartmouth; grandchildren Kirk MacDiarmid (Morgan Houston) Halifax; Kristen MacDiarmid (Iain MacLaren) Halifax; Caeleigh MacLean (William Haggerty) Currys Corner NS; and Kerry MacLean (Molly Christiansen) Smithers BC and a great grandchild, Lachlan Haggerty.
Due to Covid restrictions, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
