Bernadette Mary Eisan Clarke Thursday June 17th 2021

Bernadette Mary Eisan (nee Clarke) of Gander, Newfoundland, passed peacefully away Thursday, June 17th, 2021, at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s. Predeceased by her husband Terence, her parents Bernard and Genevieve Clarke, parents-in-law Alfred and Marie Eisan; brothers Gerald, Allister, Bernard, and William, and brother-in-law Ian Eisan. Left with loving memories are her son Christopher and wife Jill, grandsons Miles and Michael; Brothers Frank (Madonna), Leonard (Angela), Terrance, and Kevin; sisters Maude (Roland), Millicent (Peter), Maureen (Bruce), and Brenda (Jeffrey); sisters in law Margaret and Nell, and brother in law Roy Eisan (Ruth), as well as a huge circle of extended family and friends.
Berni was born in Goose Cove and spent her early childhood in Croque on the Great Northern Peninsula. She had wonderful childhood stories of growing up in rustic Newfoundland – dog teams, coastal boats, and many other elements of a time gone by. She left home at just 15 to go to high school in Baie Verte, and subsequently taught grades 1 to 9 in Fortune Arm for a year. After completing nursing assistant training in Corner Brook, she worked in Corner Brook and St. John’s before finally settling in Gander in 1972. Berni worked at James Paton Memorial Hospital and the Gander Medical Clinic, eventually spending 25 years as the indispensable assistant to Dr. Roland Forward, who was also a dear friend. After a brief retirement, Berni returned to James Paton Memorial Hospital to work in the Cancer Centre, finally retiring a second time after over 46 years in total. Her love of her work was only eclipsed by her compassion and caring for the people she encountered and helped.
In 1973, in Gander, Berni met the love of her life, Terry Eisan, who would be her devoted husband of almost 42 years. Berni and Terry had one son, Christopher, who was their pride and joy. The three of them were always an exceptionally close family, and to his parents’ great pleasure, Christopher and his wife Jill eventually bought the house next door and started a family there. Their sons Miles and Michael were the centre of Berni’s world.
Always the first to offer her time and energy to a good cause, Berni was an avid and enthusiastic volunteer in her community. She spent many years working for the Rotary, the Liberal Association, the North Atlantic Aviation Museum, and the Lion’s Club, notably becoming Gander’s first female president.
Berni loved being outdoors in nature: walking, hiking, skiing and enjoying time at the cabin.
Berni was always smiling and was eternally optimistic despite life’s challenges. Her compassion, empathy, and caring nature made her a treasured friend to so many people, in addition to being a devoted and loving Mom, Nanny, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, and so much more. Her absence will be sorely felt by all those whose lives she touched.
