Obituary of Ben Fiddler
Ben Fiddler was born in 1943 to Walter and Mary Fiddler in Cumberland House. Ben married Audrey (Chaboyer) on August 10th, 1974. They were blessed with three children: Marcie, Steven, and Glenna; special daughter Candace Cuncu (Robert); and grand-daughters Kavita Fiddler, Hannah Fiddler and Rachel Cuncu.
It was in the early 1970’s Ben began working as a Clerk with the Co-op General store in Cumberland House eventually moving up to Manager. When the Co-op Store ceased their operations in the community Ben went on to work for the Village of Cumberland House. Ben attended school in Saskatoon for his Journeyman Carpentry credentials and worked as a Carpenter for a number of years. He worked as a guide for hunters in between his jobs. The love he had for the land, outdoor activities, hunting and trapping led him into employment as a Fire Protection Worker with the Saskatchewan Environment and Resources Management (SERM) where he worked for 20 years. Ben was very active in the Anglican Church serving as Church Warden for many years right up to his passing. With the love he had for his community and recreational activities Ben also served as an Ice Maintenance worker at the community arena.
Ben was an amazing husband who looked after his wife every day without complaint. He was her cook, her nurse when she was sick, he accompanied her to all her medical appointments, he made sure the house was fit for all her needs. He was Audrey’s best friend and her true soul mate.
Many young and old will remember Ben and the impact he had on their lives. Ben had a humble personality that made him very easy to get along with. He will be especially remembered for his wonderful sense of humor as he loved telling stories to make people laugh. His quick-witted personality was a gift he used to bring laughter to every situation. Everyone knew to watch their words around Ben. If you weren’t careful you would be his next victim to his friendly, humorous comebacks. After a conversation with him, short or long, you always walked away smiling. His humor is what made him such a lovable person to all who knew him.
Whenever the family would gather for birthdays or holiday dinners everyone would anxiously wait for Ben to walk in with his famous bannock. He loved cooking and baking and would take every opportunity to teach his children and other young people how to prepare and cook wild meat. He taught his sons and nephews “life on the trap line”. Moose hunting was one of his favorite things to do with his sons/nephews and would often spend weekends on the Delta at Waterhen, Swan Lake or Cross Lake. He also loved fishing; competitive or leisure. He spent many fish derby’s with his children, nephews and friends as he loved being on the water.
Ben was always involved and supportive in community activities with one of those being cultural week festivities. Ben`s favourite time was spent outdoors doing what he greatly loved which was hunting, trapping, fishing, guiding and camping. Ben had many hobbies throughout his life that included curling, playing guitar, cross word puzzles and working in the yard. He liked to keep himself busy throughout the day. He loved gardening and before falling sick, he was often at the community garden where he spent many hours showing his daughter Glenna how to manage and tend to the garden.
Ben left peacefully at his home surrounded by his wife, his children and family members. Many people were special to Ben and the family would like to make special mention of the nurses who looked after him; nurses Colleen, Katy, Erin, Sean, and Carrie and the paramedics who tended to him as well as Dr. Ritter.
Ben is survived by his wife of 46 years Audrey; His children: Steven, Marcie (James), Glenna and Candace (Robert) Cuncu; Grandchildren: Hannah, Kavita and Rachel; Special Sister Bertha McKay; Special Daughters: Chrissy (Ralph) Settee and family, Robin Farrands (daughter from down under) and Dineen Daniels and her children whom he loved as his own grandchildren: Hailey and Tre. Sisters; Philomene Chaboyer, Besty (Norman) Constant, Evelyn McKenzie, Shirley Carriere and one brother Joe (Janet) Fiddler; his in-laws: Rose (Park), Sheila (Roy), Brian, Perry (Noreen), Frank (Cindy), Pat (Cindy), Bert (Lenor), Wanda and Emily. Numerous Nieces and Nephews too many to name.
Ben was predeceased by his parents Walter & Mary Fiddler; brothers: James, John, Marcel and two infant brothers William and Peter; Brothers-in-law: Donald Chaboyer and Raynold Carriere; Sisters-in-law: Carrie Fiddler and Maria Fiddler; in-laws: Etienne & Helen Chaboyer, and infant Rene Chaboyer; nieces: Charlotte Azure, Joan Fiddler and Julie Constant; nephew William Fiddler.
