Austin Vernon
Murphy – 79, Truro,
formerly of Tarbot, Victoria County. It is with regret that we
announce Vernon’s passing on Friday, January 1, 2021, at The
Mira Long Term Care Centre, Truro. Born at the Gavin family homestead
in Merland, Guysborough County, he was a son of the late Walter and
Florence (Gavin) Murphy.
Vernon spent his early childhood in the Antigonish area and
moved to Cape Breton with his family as a teenager. After finishing
his education at Baddeck Rural High School, Vernon moved to Ontario
where he worked as a truck driver. It was while working in Ontario
where he met and married Jean (nee Rayner/Delaney) formerly of Prince
Edward Island; Vernon and Jean returned to Nova Scotia for their
retirement years.
Vernon is survived by his beloved stepdaughters, Linda
Delaney, Wellington, Prince Edward Island and Andrea (Steve Edwards),
Burlington, Ontario, who he raised and considered his own. He is also
survived by his precious grandchildren, Ashley (Jeff), Michael
(Nicole), Sandy; cherished great grandchildren, Abigail, Chloe, Emily,
Jacob; sister, Sarah Garland, Toronto, Ontario; brothers, Albert
(Demetrea), Hamilton, Ontario; Wendell (Joan), Tarbot, Victoria
County; sister-in-law, Brenda Murphy (Dane), Big Harbour, Victoria
County; beloved nieces and nephews and their families; a number of
aunts, uncles and cousins; good friend, Gussie Matheson,
Truro.
Along with his parents, Vernon was predeceased by his wife,
Jean; daughter, Kelly Joan; sisters, Noreen Murphy, Joan
Mombourquette; brother, Jimmy Murphy; foster brother, Johnny Power;
nephew, Wally Garland; brothers-in-law, Billy Garland, Wayne
Mombourquette.
Vernon’s family would like to thank all those who
assisted him during his illness, especially his neighbors, Julie and
Tracey. The family can never repay his cousin Barbara Carroll, who
went above and beyond for Vernon; her kindness and thoughtfulness are
greatly appreciated. Also, many thanks to the staff at The Mira for
taking such good care of Vernon these past few months.
At Vernon’s request, he will be interred with his
daughter, Kelly, at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Baddeck, at a
later date.
