Obituary of Arthur N. Smith
ARTHUR N. SMITH age 85 of Horseheads, NY passed away peacefully at home on Saturday January 30, 2021 surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Art was born August 28, 1935 in Easton, PA the son of the late Herbert S. and Elizabeth Bond Smith. He was graduate of Southside High School Class of 1954 . Art earned his Bachelor’s Degree from West Virginia Wesleyan University and did graduate work at Cornell University. He married his wife, Katherine Atwood Espey “Kae” Smith on July 5, 1958 and they celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on July 5, 2018 and he was pre-deceased by Kae on January 9, 2019. Art was a member of The Pine Valley United Methodist Church, Sons of The American Revolution, The American Legion in Buckhannon, West Virginia. He was a former member of The Elmira City Council, former President of the Board of Fairport Terrace, Horseheads Village Board , and hosted The Senior Notebook. In addition to his parents, Art was pre-deceased by his siblings Eleanor Rinker, Mary Ellen Trumbull, Raymond Kern, Herbert S. Smith Jr. , Raymond Smith, and Betty Sawyer. Art loved his M & M’s and always had plenty for himself and his kids and grandchildren. He loved going to M & M’s Red Hots in Elmira for hot dogs and chocolate milk. Art was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. Art was a retired Social Studies Teacher with the Horseheads Central School District. He loved his family and friends and treasured the time he spent with them especially his grandchildren. Art is survived by his loving and devoted children: Andrew A. Smith of Horseheads, NY, Annette E. and Rev. Jeffrey V. Aiosa of Rochester, NY , and Adam A. and Kiersten Smith of East Greenbush, NY; his cherished grandchildren: Adrian and Miranda Smith of Horseheads, NY , Aaron Smith and Monica Baker of Erin, NY, Alexis Smith and her fiance’ Anthony Castiglia of North Greenbush, NY, Chelsea Aiosa and Jeremy Liss of Vestal, NY, Katherine “Katie” Aiosa and fiance’ Robert Groff Jr. of Oakfiled, NY , Austin A. Smith of Raleigh, NC, Zachary V. Aiosa of Rochester, NY , Alexander K. Smith of Horseheads, NY , Abigail K. Smith of East Greenbush, NY , Alayna G. Smith of East Greenbush, NY, Michelena Aiosa of Rochester, NY , Ethan Dellert and Jacob Dellert of East Greenbush, NY ; beloved great grandchildren: Aleigha Smith , Brynn Smith, Savannah Smith , and Ryann Smith; sister : Geneva Kotze of Bethlehem, PA ; brother: Harry Longenbach of Nazareth, PA ; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: David Baldwin Espey and Mollie Espey of Pennsylvania, John Hilton Espey and Pam Espey of Tennessee, Mary Elizabeth Espey and Margaret Louise Espey both of Pennsylvania; several nieces, nephews, cousins , and a host of caring friends and her extended family Carol (Larry) Crandall of Elmira Heights, NY. A Celebration of Art’s Life will be held at a time to be announced . Art will be laid to rest with his beloved wife Kae in Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira, NY at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Art’s name to The Pine Valley United Methodist Church 519 Pine Valley Road Pine Valley, NY 14872, Horseheads Fire And Rescue Department 134 North Main Street Horseheads, NY 14845, or CareFirst 3805 Meads Creek Road Painted Post, NY 14870 .
