Obituary
ANNI HAHLWEG
After a long and courageous struggle, the family of Anni Hahlweg would like to announce her peaceful passing on September 14, 2021 at the Gimli Hospital.
Anni was born in Annaberg, Germany during WW II on June 28, 1944. Anni, accompanied by her mom, brother, and Oma, were able to escape and find their way to a refugee camp in Berlin.
They joined other Mennonite refugees and set sail on the Volendam ship to Paraguay. After 9 years, the family was fortunate to be sponsored to Canada and a new life began for the now
family of 9.
Anni loved her life and lived it with zest and passion. Her long career at Safeway led to many happy customers and some lifelong friends. She loved going dancing with her older brother and friends at the German Club, where she met her husband, Karl Hahlweg. They married on April 24, 1964, and were blessed with two sons, Brian and Tim. Their home in Transcona was a place of parties, young people, family dinners, and fun. Anni and Karl later retired to Lake Forest Estates where they embraced their life and community in Gimli. Anni worked at Super A, known affectionately by her grandchildren as “Super Anni’s”. She volunteered at New Horizons Seniors Club, sang with the Westshore Singers, and made many more friends. Anni loved and was loved by her family and friends. Her sons were her pride and joy and her 4 granddaughters the icing on her cake. Everyone who knew her had their lives enriched.
Left to mourn her passing are her son Brian and wife Chantal, granddaughters Kiera and Riana, son Tim and wife Jodi, granddaughters Casey and Emily, stepdaughter Debbie Schneider and husband David and their family, her long time companion Roger Dickinson, brothers Viktor Dyck and wife Marian Murray, Peter Hamm and wife Maggie, sisters Leni Lousier, Liese Kleinfeld, Johanna Chin and husband Brad and many cherished nephews, nieces and friends. Anni was predeceased by her husband Karl in 2009, her parents Anna and August Hamm, parents-in-law Lucy and Alexander, and brothers-in-law George Hahlweg and Ron Kleinfeld.
Due to capacity limits related to Covid19 restrictions, a private funeral service will be held at the Gimli Lutheran Church on September 22nd. If you would like to attend, we kindly ask that you email pujo27@gmail.com to confirm seating availability.
Heartfelt thanks go out to the many caring staff at the Gimli Hospital. Donations in Anni’s memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice if so desired.
