Obituary
Alphons Joseph Karl Wehrle
August 18th, 1931 – September 26th, 2021
Following a lengthy battle with cancer, Alphons Wehrle of Selkirk, Manitoba, at the age of 90 years, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.
Alphons will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Hildtrud of 64 years; children – Cheryl (Jim), Catherine (Loretta), Helen (Gerald), Max (Angie), Theresa (Mike) and Judy; grandchildren – Jennifer & Brett, Anna, Jaime & Abbey, Ryan, Devin, & Leah, Lyanna & Owen and Carly &Taylor; great grandchildren – Hadley & Sawyer, Henry and Asha & Avni; brothers – Charlie (Stephanie), Ernie (Erika), Victor (Marlene); sisters – Erika (Stan), Elizabeth (Clifford), Hedy (Melvin) and Pat (Jack). Al is predeceased by his parents, Max & Rosa Wehrle; brothers George & Max and sisters Johanna & Rose.
Alphons will also be dearly missed by his friends and family from Little Britain, Selkirk and Germany; and by the bridge players from Selkirk and numerous other bridge clubs.
Alphons was born on August 18, 1931 on the family farm in Pigeon Lake, MB where he experienced his early years enjoying farmyard living. In 1944, the family moved from Pigeon Lake to a farm near Little Britain on Fort Garry Road. In 1995, Al and his wife Hildtrud retired from farming and relocated in 1998 to Hildtrud’s (Suttorp) family homestead on Little Britain Road. In 2012, Al and Hildtrud downsized again and moved from Little Britain to their Red River view apartment (Tollak Place) in Selkirk and finally to Woodland Courts in Selkirk where he spent his final months.
Al had known his wife Hildtrud most of his life as they were both members of Little Britain community, attending the same school, church and community events. Once married, they worked together on the Wehrle family farm in Cloverdale with Al’s mother, Rosa as well as purchased and worked the Suttorp family farm in Little Britain. Farm life brought many challenges and many joys.
Al was blessed with six children, twelve grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Al enjoyed many holidays together with his wife in Canada, United States (Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada), Mexico and Europe. Their children and grandchildren would often join them on their holidays and enjoyed special times together. Al and Hildtrud also got to know their relatives in Germany through numerous trips overseas.
Alphons was a Life Master in Bridge and would play the game whenever and wherever he found the opportunity. If there was not a bridge game, Al would teach others so he could have a game. Al’s hobbies include stamp collecting, reading and playing cards – including Doppel Kopf and Skat with his Little Britain community friends.
Al was a dedicated school bus driver for 25 years (1960-1985) and declares a lifetime of accident-free driving.
Throughout Al’s years living in Cloverdale and Little Britain, he participated on the St. Margaret Church Council and the Knights of Columbus. He was Treasurer of the Little Britain Community Club and the German Schützenverein for many years.
In 2016, Al was diagnosed with prostate cancer which started a long progression of treatments.
The family would like to express a special appreciation to the Staff and Residents at Woodland Courts. Alphons was especially grateful for the Homecare and Palliative Care teams, and Father Gerald for their compassion in support of his daily and end of life needs.
