Obituary
Joseph Maurice Alain (Allen) Delorme
1951 – 2021
It is with profound sadness we announce that our family has lost a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Allen passed away in Edson, AB on January 18, 2021 at the age of 69. He is survived by his wife Terry, son Kevin (Jennifer) Delorme, daughter Kristie (Derek) Majeau, his grandchildren Kayley (Noah) Birkett, Zoey, and Ethan, as well as a sister Diane (Gerry) Chabot and numerous nieces and nephews.
At Allen’s request, there will be no funeral, however at a later date, we will get together to celebrate a life well-lived.
Allen was born July 6, 1951 in Steinbach, Manitoba to Wilfred and Rosa Aimee Delorme. He spent his early life in the village of Marchand, Manitoba as part of a large family and had seven siblings, three brothers and four sisters. He moved to Edson as a teenager to live and work with his oldest brother, Art. After a short time in BC, he moved back to Edson where he met and married Terry and raised two children, Kevin and Kristie. They provided years of joy, along with moments of exasperation, and have grown into wonderful adults with families of their own. He was so proud of both of them. He doted on his grandkids, Kayley, Zoey and Ethan even though his loud voice was known to startle them occasionally. That’s why when Kayley was younger, she gave him his nickname, “Grumpy”, which was soon adopted by all of us. It was always said with love as everyone knew his bark was much worse than his bite.
He worked mostly in the logging industry around Edson – from felling trees by hand for Johnson & Herbert to running his own company and equipment. He even had a brief stint as a truck driver including a couple of seasons driving the ice road in the Northwest Territories delivering mining supplies including explosives. In recent years, he was semi-retired, trying to spend just a little time working and a lot of time enjoying the things he loved.
There wasn’t much that Allen enjoyed more than the heat of the sun. It was never too hot for him. Summer was definitely his favourite time of year whether he was playing golf, mowing the lawn, or just sitting outside enjoying a beer. Because of Edson’s usual late springs, he and his friend, Dave, would head out to the Okanagan every April to enjoy their shared passion for golf – sometimes playing 36 holes a day. They did this for decades before Dave moved to BC. No problem, Allen just started going to visit him for their golf outings.
He loved playing guitar, especially old country music, and many hours were spent hanging out around a campfire or even crowded into our RV playing and
singing – the voices getting louder and louder as the evening wore on. He was so happy that his son Kevin shared this passion and would often play along with him.
Allen would also go for coffee with his friends and be gone for hours talking about who knows what. He must have enjoyed it though because he did it every day and sometimes multiple times a day. While he was not a big talker, he loved nothing more than to sit back and be entertained by everyone else’s stories.
He was an honest man, a hard-working man, a man who loved his family and friends. He was a good man.
The family would like to thank Dr. Gous and the nurses at the Edson Healthcare Centre for their care and support on his last night and a huge thank you to Dr. Sood for doing everything he could over the past few years and for caring so much.
As mentioned above, there will be no funeral at Allen’s request, but we hope to have one heck of a backyard campfire and get together once the weather and Covid permit.
