Alexander ‘Sandy”s Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Alexander (Sandy) Thomas Mitchell of Paris formerly of Tillsonburg announce his passing on June 24, 2021 at the age of 90 after several months of declining health. Sandy passed peacefully with his wife Rita and his family by his side.
Sandy was born in Edinburgh Scotland on June 18, 1931 to Thomas and Williamina Mitchell. He emigrated to Canada where he met and married Rita. He obtained a chemistry degree from the University of Edinburgh and was a long-time employee of the United Co-Operatives of Ontario until his retirement.
Sandy grew up in the war years and could be seen spending weekends in the country at relatives’ farms and hosteling across Scotland in the summer months. He was an enthusiastic and talented athlete playing rugby, cricket, golf and curling. After a serious car accident when he was 27 years old, his mobility was never quite the same, but his passion for sport and giving back remained. He became an avid supporter of Tillsonburg minor hockey as a coach, manager and off-ice official. He was also active for many years with the Tillsonburg golf club, enjoying Sunday afternoon games with his sons. As the years progressed, he turned his attention to bridge and could replay hands with the memory of a master. Upon retirement, Sandy dedicated his time to being a great Papa to his grandchildren.
Sandy is survived by his wife of 61 years Rita, and his sons Ian (Janette) and Bruce (Patti) as well as his grandchildren Scott (Caitlin), Lisa Modesto (Ryan), Kirstin Stevenson (Matthew), Kellsie, Kailee and two great grandchildren, Alexander and James Modesto.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Bernadette McNeil and nurse Tracy Sage for their compassion and care.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to the DWAYNE D. BUDGELL Funeral Home Ltd. In accordance with Sandy’s expressed wishes cremation has taken place. A private family celebration of Sandy’s life will take place at a future date.
