Alexander “Sandy” MacDonald of Harbourstone Enhanced Care passed away quietly on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born January 23, 1936, at Dundee, Richmond Co., he was the son of the late James J. MacDonald and Rossie E. MacLeod.
Sandy resided most of his life at Soldiers Cove, where he lived with his late uncle, Walter MacLeod and stayed on alone at the old homestead after his uncle passed on.
He was a woodsman by trade and made his living all his life by cutting logs, pit-timber and pulpwood. He had a great respect and love of all nature and all wildlife.
After suffering a severe stroke in 1993, he became a resident of Breton Bay and then Harbourstone Enhanced Care, where he made and kept many friends.
Gifted with a great memory and interested in current affairs and what was happening in the surrounding communities, Sandy was always up for a good visit and a good talk. He always had a great word for all management and staff and all employees, both past and present, at Breton Bay and Harbourstone.
The family will always be eternally grateful for the care, compassion, assistance and genuine love shown to Sandy during his long stay with them, truly a home away from home.
Also, a heartfelt thank you to the late Dr. Murdock Smith, Dr. Steven Hall and all medical staff.
Sandy is survived by his brother, John, Soldiers Cove and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and uncle, Sandy was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Georgina MacDonald; brothers, Arnold O’Toole and Vernon O’Toole; sisters, Norma Fox and Thelma Hubley; two nephews and three nieces; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, September 10, 2021 at 11 a.m., with Mr. Gary Grant officiating. For anyone not able to make the long trip to the service in Sydney, you are invited to attend the committal prayers at 2 p.m. in Lewis Cove Cemetery, Grand River.
Should anyone wish, memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or to a charity of your choice. Sandy’s wish would be for people to be kind to one another, as everyone was kind to him.
