Alan Rutherford Winship Wednesday May 5th 2021

Peacefully on May 5, 2021 at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus at the age of 87 as a result of covid-19.
Alan was a well respected lawyer, having retired at the end of 2019 after practising in Ottawa for 50 years, the majority as a partner of Thomas and Winship. He had a deep faith in Jesus, and his service to the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa began in the 1970s and continued through the terms of six bishops. He was appointed as Diocesan Solicitor in 1981 until his retirement from that position in 2019, and as Chancellor from 2000 – 2004. He was educated at the University of Saskatchewan, Queen’s, Carleton and the University of Toronto, and in the early years worked at the Department of Trade and Commerce and the Privy Council Office.
Alan cultivated beautiful gardens and enjoyed the NAC symphony for many years. Those who had the privilege of working alongside Alan felt valued and remained with him for decades. He was humble, compassionate, determined, joyful, and had a wonderful sense of humour. A true gentleman. Supporting charities was an important aspect of his life. His beautiful baritone voice will be remembered by all who knew him. Alan will be missed and fondly remembered by many friends including those in the Anglican and legal communities, and particularly by his friend Myles MacDowall.
Alan’s friends are grateful for the compassionate care he received from the courageous men and women who attended him during his illness. For those who wish, please make a memorial donation in Alan’s honour to a charity of your choice.
