Obituary of William Arnold Campbell
(February 24, 1932 — September 12, 2020)
Sadly Bill Campbell passed away on September 12 2020 in his 89th year at Belleville General Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was the much loved husband and best friend of his high school sweetheart Barbara Joan Bristol for 65 years. He will be missed tremendously by Barbara, their three children and their spouses – Suzanne and Gary Foster; Cheryl Campbell and Gordon Meech; and Peter Campbell and Joanne Leith. Bill was the proud and loving grandfather to Nicholas and Caitlin Foster; Christopher and Taylor Meech; and Malcolm and Joel Campbell.
Bill was born in Belleville February 24 1932 to Arnold and Nellie Campbell. He was the eldest of four children – predeceased by Kathryn Campbell, Jean James and survived by Paul Campbell and his wife Lorraine of Halifax.
Bill proudly worked as the third generation in the family business of Campbell Monument Co Ltd. During his 47 years as a memorial craftsman and businessman, he learned all the skills of the stoneworking tradition and although he worked his way up to owner and President, nothing made him happier than actually working in the plant. He strove for quality, fairness and integrity in all his business dealings with both the public and fellow employees. Upon his retirement in 1997 he realized his dream by selling the business to those employees with whom he had worked, and the employee ownership continues today.
In his spare time Bill enjoyed boating, camping and making fine wooden furniture. He was a proud United Empire Loyalist and a lifelong musician who played both trombone and baritone. During his life he had the great pleasure of playing as a member of The Commodores, the Men of Note, the Quinte Living Centre Band, the Air Force Band and as both the founder and member of the Concert Brass.
Bill was a man of strong faith and was always an active member of the United Church of Canada, most recently attending St. Matthews. Throughout his lifetime he served in many capacities including Sunday school teacher and choir member. Bill and Barb particularly enjoyed the company of friends at many church social functions.
However, Bill was first and foremost a family man. He worked tirelessly and lovingly for his family his entire life. Big family meals with grace said by Bill (Dad) were a cherished family tradition. The wonderful memories, his generosity, wisdom and love will live on in all who knew him. We will all miss him deeply. A private service was held at Steele Funeral Home, Moira Street Chapel, Belleville (613-968-2273)
