Obituary of Wilbert Wilbur Shanks
Wilbert Shanks of Elgin passed away peacefully at Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital (Smiths Falls site) on Thursday July 16, 2020 two days before his 86 birthday. Loving husband of the late Hazel Minnish. Dear brother of Ruth Galway of Lyndhurst. Predeceased by his parents Robert and Agnes (Henderson) Shanks, brothers Jim, Murray and Hugh Shanks and by sisters Roberta Hudson, Eunice Berry and Yvonne Jardine. Fondly remembered by several nieces and nephews and by the many friends he made over the years. Special thanks to the staff on the 2nd floor of the Smiths Falls Hospital for the kind and compassionate care of Wilbert, over the past few months.
Wilbert was an avid sports fan, He especially loved hockey and was a proud supporter of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Westport Rideaus. Wilbert was always out and about and was well known by many. He enjoyed many activities and could regularly be seen at rural fairs, harness races, tractor pulls and church suppers as well as many other community activities. Wilbert could always be counted on to lend a helping hand to any friend or neighbour in need.
In compliance with current Health and Public Safety Directives with Social Distancing a Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday July 21, 2020 at 1:00 pm in Sandy Hill Cemetery, North Augusta. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Wilbert’s memory to the Smiths Falls Community Hospital Foundation, Gananoque Humane Society or the Leeds Chargers Minor Hockey Association.
