Térèse Genevieve Cossitt passed away peacefully at the Western Long-Term Care, Palliative Care Unit, on June 26, 2020 at the age of 90 years. She was born in Corner Brook and was the daughter of the late William and Kathleen (Kennedy) Cossitt. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her twin sister Mary, her younger sister Catherine Yates, her sister-in-law Dorothy Cossitt, her dearly loved nieces and nephews: Mary Yates (Jamie), Peggy Sprague (Duff), Patricia Adams (Michael), Michael Yates (late Lynn), Bill Cossitt (Mary), Gus Cossitt (Debra), Sheilagh Cossitt-Holloway (Doug), and Kelly (Cossitt) Tsang; and many grandnieces and grandnephews as well as her great grandniece. She was predeceased by her parents William and Kathleen, her brother Gus Cossitt and her brother-in-law George Yates.
Térèse was born in Corner Brook and started her education at St. Henry’s School and Mount Bernard Academy in Corner Brook. She continued her studies for several years at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax through to the University of Alberta and Newman Theological College in Edmonton. Throughout her career, she taught in various elementary schools and high schools. As a specialist in reading, she was supervisor of programs in Edmonton Catholic Schools and for a period was Director of The Reading Clinic at The University of Alberta. Her interests in religious studies resulted in her attending Newman Theological College and upon completion of her studies there, she was appointed director of Religious Studies and became Director of Religious Education for Edmonton Catholic Schools and Térèse also taught at Newman College.
Following her retirement from teaching, Térèse returned to her home in Corner Brook and enjoyed many happy years with family and old and new friends. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at 10:00 am at the Cathedral of The Most Holy Redeemer and Immaculate Conception with Father Edward Terry presiding (with a maximum attendance of 50 in compliance with government Covid-19 restrictions). Interment will follow at Mt. Patricia Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
