Obituary
Stephen “Steve” Alexander Hall passed away on September 25th, 2020. A man of many interests he loved coins, fast cars and old trucks, all types of animals (which he affectionately called “critters”), tinkering in the garage with his many tools, and making questionable (and sometimes borderline illegal) experiments.
He was a successful contractor who built his family a home on a 3-acre property on the 5th Concession in Waterdown. He also managed to skillfully transplant an engine from an old school bus into his work truck, which he lovingly called “Walinga”.
He leaves behind his daughter Jaclyn Hall (“Kid #1”) and her husband Steven Turner, son Daniel Hall (“Kid #2”) and his wife Kristen Homer, and son Michael Hall (“Kid #3”). He was also survived by his 12-year old rescue Chihuahua “Frisco”, whom he always said would outlive him. Dad had a tendency to wear his heart on his sleeve and leaves behind a big extended family, including brothers (Gord [deceased], Dave, Mark and Baird) their partners, nieces and nephews, and more people than we can mention.
Dad loved telling stories. If someone had something to say, he had a story about it. Legends of the Lake Erie “beach weasel”, falling through lake ice while skating at the Royal Botanical Gardens, rescuing his dog Chester, the barn collapsing from snow moments after Dad managed to escape, and many more. He had enough stories to fill the internet. He was a man of many phrases like “quack!”, “shig-a-ma”, “yah-buts”, “world’s smallest violin” and who could forget “the world is bigger than you, and you are not me”.
He left his kids with many fond memories, riddles and collectables. To this day, we still haven’t solved “why is a fish, when it swims?” (we don’t get it either). His best personality traits will continue to live through us including his love for critters, being the loudest in the room and the ability to find humour in any situation.
Dad died driving himself to the hospital while rescuing a stray dog and simultaneously giving himself chest compressions. Or maybe not. We all know how he liked to tell stories.
A celebration of life will be held by his three kids at a date to be determined. If you’d like to do something for the family, please feel free to share a photo or a memory of Steve aka Papa Hall. We’d love to hear from you.
The family will be honoring Stephen’s memory by partnering with the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) to plant a tree in his honor. We ask that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made through the RBG website. Please select the tribute option and dedicate the donation to Stephen Hall.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Stephen Steve Alexander Hall October 1 1960
