Sr Clarissa Winters March 8 2020

Obituary
WINTERS, Sister Clarissa
It pleased God to call our dear Sister Clarissa to her heavenly home on March 8, 2020 when she died at Samaritan Place after a brief time of illness. Sr. Clarissa (Helen Elizabeth) was born on January 23, 1928 at Annaheim, SK to Ida (Schneider) and William Winters. She grew up on a farm with five brothers and two sisters and attended Harvest and Arras Schools from grade one – ten. At the age of 18 Helen decided to work at St. Elizabeth Hospital for a year before continuing her education. However, becoming acquainted with religious life and attracted by the spirit of the Sisters, their joy, simplicity and prayer life, she decided to enter the convent. Her family was not too supportive at that time so Helen worked another six years before entering. On May 26, 1954, Helen received the Franciscan habit of the Sisters of St. Elizabeth and the name Sr. Clarissa. She pronounced her temporary religious vows in 1956 and perpetual vows in 1959. At her 50th anniversary in 2006 Sr. Clarissa stated that she “never had regrets about entering the convent and was always happy in my decision”. After obtaining her high school diploma, Sr. Clarissa entered the St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Humboldt, graduated with the proficiency award, and continued working at St. Elizabeth Hospital until her retirement in 2006. Although she worked in several departments, her specialty was obstetrics where she was head nurse from 1964 until her retirement. During this time, she took her first year of Arts at St. Peter’s College and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a major in Administration from the University of Saskatchewan. Other positions she held in the community were local superior at St. Francis Convent, general councillor for the Congregation and board member of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. Once retired from nursing, Sr. Clarissa devoted herself to household duties at St. Francis Convent: cooking, baking, quilting, sewing, gardening and housekeeping. In 2007 she moved to the Motherhouse and worked as a receptionist among other duties. We remember Sr. Clarissa as a happy person, devoted to her work and community, very prayerful, always ready for a party. She loved dancing, old time music, crocheting, making preserves, harvesting and preserving garden and orchard produce. Sr. Clarissa is survived by her Sisters in Community, her sister Johanna Pitzel; her brothers Bill and Michael; her sisters-in-law Ramona and Joan and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Ida and William; her sister Lorraine; her brothers Norbert, Gilbert and Edward; her sisters-in-law Wilhelmina and Edna; her brothers-in-law Alois Pitzel and Al Stang. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2020 at St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church (1902 Munroe Ave. S.) in Saskatoon. The Rite of Committal will be held at 2:00 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Humboldt, SK. Arrangements in care of Chelsea Krentz – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
