Shirl as he was lovingly referred to was born in Trap Cove, Labrador. He worked many jobs in his lifetime which started in White Point Labrador and then brought him to the Loran station in Port aux Basques in 1954. Then he moved on to the Canadian Coast Guard where he was afforded the chance to travel the world, a journey that he was so very proud of. In 1989 he retired from the Coast Guard, and he spent a few years working at the fisherman’s Market in Halifax. He volunteered for many years with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 11, helping run the weekly Bingo games, doing Remembrance Day programs and after that he could be found dancing the night away on Saturday nights with his friends and relatives all while he had a hug and smile for everyone he met. He spent many days doing what he loved to do most, reading thousands of books, he also liked berry picking, hunting and fishing and spending time with his family and friends. He loved his life on the boats and would often tell stories of his travels. He was a very appreciative man that was thankful for any thing that anyone did for him no matter how big or little and he referred to his caregivers as “ His Girls”.
Due to the current public health advisory of COVID-19, there will be a private family viewing at East Haven Funeral Home. In keeping with Shirley’s’ wishes cremation will follow with interment to take place at a later date. Flowers graciously accepted or donations in his memory can be made to the family.
