Dr. Selwyn Fitz-Stanley Sage Sr.
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the peaceful passing of Selwyn Fitz-Stanley Sage on Thursday, April 16th, 2020 in Sudbury, Ontario. Selwyn was husband to Paulette and father to Margaret-Ann and Selwyn Jr. (predeceased); brother to Norman, Oliver and Ricky; son of Edna (predeceased) and Fitz (predeceased). He will also be missed by many nephews, nieces and cousins.
Selwyn was born in Ellerton in the parish of St. George, Barbados. After completing his B.A., he taught in Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago as well as Ghana before arriving in Canada in 1965 to complete his Masters degree in Literature at McGill University in Montreal. He later settled in Sudbury in 1969 where he began his career as an English teacher at Ecole Secondaire MacDonald Cartier and later as the Head of the English Department at Confederation Secondary School in Val Caron where he remained until his retirement.
Selwyn went on to complete a Masters and Doctorate in Education so he could share the highest knowledge with his students. Besides education, Selwyn helped to bring West Indian culture to Northern Ontario by establishing the Afro-Caribbean Association along with Zeke Kanhai and Kingsley Gilliam. He loved nature and would spend many summer days in Killarney Provincial Park. Selwyn was an avid cricket fan and later developed a love of the Toronto Raptors.
For Selwyn, education had changed his life from his humble beginnings in Barbados and so he felt a profound responsibility to encourage young people to receive a higher education whenever possible. His legacy lives on through his family and the thousands of students he inspired in Sudbury and beyond.
