Ryan & Hugh Nickerson Thursday October 1st 2020

It is with profound sadness and pain that we announce the passing of Ryan and Hugh Nickerson.
NICKERSON, Ryan H.
October 12th 1958 – October 1st 2020
Ryan Nickerson, 61, passed away while doing one of the things he loved most: fishing with his son surrounded by the beauty of the Capilano River.
He recently celebrated 32 years of happily married life with his loving wife Barb Rogers. Ryan is survived by Barb and his daughter Emily (Jamie). He also leaves behind the families of his brothers Randy (Jan) and Rob (Donna); sisters-in-law Patricia (Paul) and Sandy (George); as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Above all, Ryan was a loving husband, father, and friend. He will be fondly remembered for his unending patience, genuine kindness, and unconditional generosity (as well as a legendary ability to recycle his own jokes). His gentle nature, coupled with his open expressions of love and appreciation for others, meant that he was always there to lend a smile and use his energy as a force for good. He continues to inspire us all.
Ryan was born to Hugh Nickerson and Pauline Nickerson (nee Lysak) in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He attended Lakehead University and the University of Western Ontario. Upon graduation, he moved to Calgary and met the love of his life – Barb. They married in 1988 and continued the journey westward, eventually settling in North Vancouver, BC to raise a family. One of the constants in Ryan’s life was his deep love for family and his incredible pride in his children.
For over 30 years, Ryan worked in the advertising and telecommunications industries where he earned the respect of his colleagues and employees. He approached work in the same way he approached life: with creativity, curiosity, and humour. In his spare time, Ryan often neglected his household chores in favour of playing hockey three times a week and cycling when he wasn’t doing that.
Beyond this, Ryan was an immensely talented artist and musician who loved to share his creative energy. In retirement, when most others his age pursue the familiar, Ryan was fearless in exploring new creative endeavours. He had a gift for observation and his art captured the beauty of the world as he saw it.
There will be a celebration of Ryan’s and Hugh’s life for family and friends in the future. If you wish to donate in their memory, contributions may be made to North Shore Rescue.
NICKERSON, Hugh E.
January 13th, 1993 – October 1st, 2020
Hugh Nickerson passed away on October 1st, 2020, in North Vancouver, BC. His family takes comfort in the knowledge that he died while spending time with his Dad and sharing a hobby they both loved.
It is remarkable how much adventure Hugh was able to pack into his life. He was an avid traveler who explored all parts of the world. Whether surfing in Southeast Asia, cliff jumping in South America, or skiing the Coast Mountains, he always had a good story to tell and a laugh to share. At the same time, he was never fazed by the fear of missing out; he had an amazing ability to enjoy himself and fully appreciate where he was and what he had in life. Closer to home, he sought adventure by discovering – usually by ski, bike, or kayak – BC’s mountains and waterways. Although he was taken too early, Hugh lived a life rich in experience, exploration, and friendship. He fully lived every minute of his 27 years.
Hugh brought joy to people. He possessed a dry sense of humour, a quick wit and a laugh that drew others to him. He was thoughtful, easygoing and observant – until he broke in with comment that would light up the room. His smile relayed his calm, laid-back nature that included everyone in its warmth. Hugh will be remembered for his genuine knack for friendship; he had a rare ability to bring people together and make friends effortlessly.
Growing up on the North Shore sparked Hugh’s love for the outdoors. A graduate of Handsworth Secondary and BCIT, he spent much of his spare time playing hockey and skiing with friends. He went on to work at Whistler Blackcomb where he thrived, turning his love of skiing into a livelihood.
Hugh will be deeply missed by his mother Barb, sister Emily (Jamie), and girlfriend Charlotte, as well as his many aunts, uncles and cousins. In his wake, he also leaves a circle of friends who feel his loss profoundly.
The spark that was Hugh Nickerson remains alive in the hearts and memories of those lucky enough to have known him. He would want you to keep that alive and nurture it by creating adventures and memories with those that you love. This is his gift to all who grieve his passing.
There will be a celebration of Ryan’s and Hugh’s life for family and friends in the future. If you wish to donate in their memory, contributions may be made to North Shore Rescue.

  1. Very sad to hear of the tragic events. I was fortunate enough to have attended Hillcrest and played hockey with Ryan on many occasions. He was good player, a great guy and a pleasure to be around. I can only imagine his son fitting a similar mold. They will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with you. Regards Rod Johns and family (Melbourne Australia)
