Ruth King
1921-2020
Ruth May King passed away peacefully at the Kiwanis Nursing
Home in Sus, on Sunday, June 28th, 2020,
with her family by her side. She was in her
99th year and was the last surviving member of
her family. Born in Mercer Settlement, NB, in 1921, she was the
daughter of the late Ira and Edna (Thompson) Mercer.
Ruth grew up in Mercer Settlement, and attended the
Parleeville School, and the Mercer Settlement Church. Ruth was twelve
when her mother passed away, so at a young age she took on many family
responsibilities. She frequently travelled to the City Market in Saint
John to sell eggs and produce from the farm. In her early twenties she
worked as a housekeeper for Dr. Kennedy in Sus. She met Roland King
of Norton, fell in love, and was married in July of 1947. They had 3
red-haired daughters and lived their life on the farm in Norton. Ruth
was a wonderful mother, homemaker and farm wife, raising chickens,
tending the garden, driving the tractor, and cooking fantastic meals.
She was very close with, and always there for her girls, celebrating
every birthday together, and taking many day and overnight
trips.
Ruth was a life member of St. Andrew’s United
Church in Norton, and faithfully attended UCW. She was also a life
member of the NB Women’s Institute. Ruth loved growing
strawberries, gathering eggs, quilting, knitting, and made the best
biscuits and pancakes. A cup of tea and a snack were always part of a
visit with Ruth, who would sit in her sunporch, with her geraniums in
every window. With the support of her daughters, homemakers,
neighbours, friends, and family, Ruth was able to live at home until
she was 95.
Ruth is survived by her daughters: Alice Hayward (Clifford)
of Saint John, Glenna Cameron (Marty) of Sus, and Kathryn Dearman
(John) of Norton; her very special grandchildren: Sara Hayward, Amy
Meahan (Michael), Evan Dearman (Cate), and Ryan Dearman (Sarah). She
was also blessed with her great-grandchildren: Micky, Piper, Curtis,
and Iyla; as well as 17 cherished nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her
loving husband Roland; her siblings: Robert, Sarah, Annie, Evelyn,
Margaret, Harry, Lawson, Roland’s siblings Jennie and
Dawson, and spouses. Earlier this year, Ruth also lost a very special
nephew, Billy Colpitts.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Kiwanis
Nursing Home for the care and compassion shown to Ruth.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Sherwood’s
Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road,
Norton, NB. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, private services will be
held.
Memorial donations in memory of Ruth may be made to the
Riverbank Cemetery or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
