Roy Stimson (KIA SPA)
December 8, 1943-October 27, 2020
Roy (Heavy Shield) Stimson of Siksika Nation left us unexpectedly at the age of 77 on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 with his family by his side at the Bethany Health Care Centre in Calgary, AB.
Roy always mentioned his last name was originally Heavy Shield that Stimson was a name given from Dunbow Residential School.
Roy was born on December 8, 1943 in Siksika Nation, Alberta. He attended Old Sun Residential school. Where he met his wife Lorna (Cat Face) Stimson. He was a good caregiver and devoted to his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. His interests were of a “jack of all trades” he was a Carpenter, Fire Fighter, Mechanic, he even got into Pig Farming, to name a few. He loved boxing and became a Golden Glove Boxing Champion and coached Boxing to many boys. Roy took pride in his work and accomplished everything he set himself to do. Roy will be remembered for his humble life, always willing to give a helping hand to those in need. He lived by Siksika traditions fluent in Blackfoot language; our culture, the Sundance, Pow Wow gatherings. He taught many people to live a life of endurance, compassion, humility and never to forget where you came from. Later in Roy’s life he was diagnosed with Arthritis, Diabetes he always took time to encourage people, especially the ones going through dialysis. He had many friends and relatives from Treaty 7 area includes Blackfeet Nation (USA) and TsuuTina – Jacobs family. His favorite pass time was visiting, travelling and playing Bingo although he lost more than winning but that was okay. He will be remembered for his smile when he greeted you, kindness, gentle nature, and his sense of humour. He was very open-minded, spoke his mind and believed in change and making changes.
Roy was survived by his daughter Roylene (Dave); son Roy Jr., 28 Grandchildren and Great grandchildren, his adopted children: Norma Three Eagles, Lena Running Rabbit, Hank Eagle Head, and Gloria Haberlack. He is also survived by his best friends Don Willier, Randy Hairy Bull and Horace Bull Bear as well as his relations: Raw Eaters, Axe, Brass, Running Rabbit, Bull Bear, Doore, Turning Robe, Black Horse, Spotted Eagle, AYoungMan, Red Crow, Pretty Youngman, Crowfoot, Water Chief, Weasel Child, Three Suns, Wolf Leg, Wolf Ear, Wright, Maguire, Crane Bear and Breaker. Roy was predeceased by his loving wife Lorna, Children: Ray, Denise, Debra, Sandra, Tammy, Shirley Bull Bear; Grandchildren: Rance Bear Hat, Tommy Stimson. Parents: Edward Connor and Doris (Raw Eater), Grandparents: John and Millie Raw Eater and Albert Stimson (Spotted Eagle), brothers: Eddy, Bruce, Patrick, Xaviar, Ralph, Colin, Richard (Dickie) and Adolphus Weasel Child. Sisters: Patsy, Betty and Peggy, Audrey and Ruby; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Wake Services will be held at Siksika Arbour (Siksika Nation, Alberta) on Sunday November 1, 2020 at 6:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held at Siksika Arbour (Siksika Nation, Alberta) on Monday November 2, 2020 at 11:00 am. Gravesite Service to follow at Paul Little Walker Cemetery, Siksika Nation, Alberta. Forward condolences through Thom’s Funeral Home. We the family would like to thank all the people who offered words of encouragement and support during our loss of our loved one, Roy. A special thank you to the doctors and nurses of the Bethany Health Care Centre, Siksika Nation Ambulance and Health Services, Siksika Ladies and Men’s Outreach Program, Siksika Home Care (Meals on wheels) and Strathmore Hospital.
