Rosanna Lauer Friday December 4th 2020

Rosanna Valeda Lauer (née Gauthier) was born November 4, 1929 in Colinton, Alberta. She was the third of nine siblings and carried a strong commitment to family with her throughout her entire life. She is predeceased by her husbands Alphonse Kugler and Arnold Lauer, her parents Paulidar and Roseanna Gauthier, son-in-law Danny Crum, brothers Paul Gauthier and Rene Gauthier, and sisters Agnes Gauthier and Laura Girard.
Rosanna moved to Port Alice at the age of seven and the time she spent on Vancouver Island were dear memories for her. At fourteen, she moved with her family to Lulu Island then later to Maillardville where her French-Canadian roots continued to flourish. Rosanna worked hard all of her life and most of that work was spent in service of others. She was proud to have worked as a nurse’s aide at Saint Mary’s Hospital and alongside her husband, Alphonse, to build several of their homes. She was a proud Port Coquitlam resident for many years where she started raising her family with Diane, Ronny, Roger and Bernadette. Her beloved Alphonse died of polio in 1959 and at 29, Rosanna was left widowed with four young children. Her devotion to her children, her unwavering faith, and her connection to her siblings helped to carry her through those difficult times.
A courtship later began from a connection through Ronny and Roger to the parish altar server trainer. In 1968, she married Arnold Lauer at Our Lady of Assumption church. They welcomed Jean Lauer to their family in 1969 and the family of five “brats” was complete. Arnold and Rosanna enjoyed 39 happy years of marriage before his death in 2007. In the time following Arnold’s death, her battle with dementia became more and more burdensome. The cruel disease took a great deal from her as she struggled over the years, but it was no match for her caring and loving nature which was with her to the very end.
Rosanna is survived by her five children; Diane Crum, Ronny (Pam) Kugler, Lt. Colonel (Ret’d) Roger (Heather) Kugler, Bernadette (Tim) Edwards, Jean (François) Gagnon, and 12 grandchildren; Tisha (Aaron Frazer) Kugler, Alec (Tammy) Kugler, Gordon (Heather) Crum, Laurel (Luke Walker) Crum, Tyler (Brea Meadows) Kugler, Kyle (Meagan) Kugler, Dylan (Natasha) Kugler, Jarrett Edwards, Caleigh Edwards, Therese Edwards, Katherine Gagnon, Nicolas Gagnon and 7 great-grandchildren; Tayler, Ashton and Rylie Carloss (Tisha Kugler), Teya Kugler (Alec), Lawson and Meila Kugler (Kyle), and Hailey Kugler (Dylan).
Rosanna will always be remembered for her boundless capacity for love. Her home, her table and indeed her heart made room for a great many people, both family and friends, over the years. She had a unique gift for gathering everyone into her home and binding them to her heart.
She died peacefully at Menno Home in Abbotsford on December 4, 2020.
