Obituary of Robert Douglas Gerrard
It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Douglas Gerrard, late of Southey, Sk on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at the age of 68 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Douglas in 1975 and Dorothy in 2018. Bob is survived by his wife Shirley, who is the “Love of his life” and “ Best Friend”; their three children; Rhett (Corinne), Kelli (Jody) Kemp, Mark (Jillian); and seven grandchildren; Bryck and Taya Kemp, Rex and Bode Gerrard, Mya Gerrard, Grace and Hanna Shourie. Bob is also survived by his siblings Bill (Bev) Gerrard, Bonnie (James) Thurmeier, Betty (Pete) Hubick and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was born April 19, 1951 in Southey, Sk. He had three passions in life: his family, hockey, and farming! Bob (Bobby, BG) loved the game of hockey and at a young age and was fortunate enough to play at a competitive level with the Weyburn Red Wings, where they were the runner up at the Memorial Cup in 1970. The following year, 1971, he played with the Regina Pats and then was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers. With the Flyers being very strong that year, Bob was on standby playing on their farm team in the Eastern Hockey League, the Jersey Devils (1971-73). The following years he played for the Long Island Cougars (1973-74), and the Hampton Gulls (1974-76). After returning home Bob continued to be involved in the hockey world playing senior hockey himself and coaching many minor and senior hockey teams throughout the years for the Southey Marlins Hockey Club.
Bob was a hardworking, passionate farmer who loved his farm. He loved spending time on the farm embracing the morning sun, fresh air, and the birds singing. He loved making daily trips to the farm to feed his cats. He was a dedicated husband and father, and loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren! He loved to travel with his wife and friends, and enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s competitive edge at sports!
Thank you to Dr. Abujhar and the Pasqua Hospital 4D&4B staff for their gracious care over the past few months. Bob’s battle came to an end when he could not find the strength to keep fighting the complications that arose!
Family and friends so wishing, may make donations in memory of Bob to Southey Skating Rink/Prostate Cancer/Canadian Blood Services/War Amps/Southey Lutheran or Southey United Church.
A Memorial to follow at a later date, due to the events of recent days.
