Reverend Myron Michael Chimy, OSBM
Reverend Myron Michael Chimy, OSBM died peacefully at the Covenant Health Youville Home in St. Albert, AB on Thursday, January 23, 2020. Born Michael Chimy, on November 4, 1933 in Radway, AB to John and Magdalina (Kuzyk) Chimy, he entered the Novitiate of Basilian Order of St. Josaphat in Mundare, AB on March 10, 1950 and made his Solemn Profession of Vows in the Order on January 1, 1955. He was ordained to the holy priesthood on June 29, 1960 by Bishop Ivan Buchko in Rome, Italy.
Throughout his life of ministry in the Basilian Order, Father Myron served in many capacities in the Basilian Apostolate. He was Pastor in several parishes throughout the Mundare and Thorsby/Calmar districts. Aside from parish work, Father Myron worked at The Basilian Press (Ukrainian) in Toronto and at the Order’s Summer Camp at Pigeon Lake, AB (Camp St. Basil). Father Myron also served as the Novice Master (Magister) for the Canadian Province in Ottawa and in Mundare, and as the Assistant in the combined Canadian/American Noviciate in Glen Cove, New York. He also spent many years serving as the Superior of the Mundare Monastery.
In 1996, Father Myron was elected Provincial Superior of the Basilians in Canada and was stationed in Winnipeg, MB until 2004, when he was assigned as Superior of St. Gregory of Nyssa monastery in Weston (Toronto), ON.
Father Myron is survived by his sisters, Mary Jones and Anne Bullard; and his brother, Eugene Chimy; along with their respective families.
Monastic Parastas will be celebrated at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Mundare, AB on Friday January 31 at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday February 1 at 10:00 a.m., also at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, with burial to follow in the Basilian Order’s section of Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Mundare, AB. Donations in memory of Father Myron Chimy, OSBM may be made to the Education of Basilian Priests, c/o Basilian Fathers, 737 Bannerman Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R2X 1J9.
