HAMMERLINDL, Paul Harvey
Paul Harvey Hammerlindl passed away peacefully in his sleep, on Saturday, September 19, 2020, at the age of 86.
The vast portion of Paul`s life was lived in Mantario, SK. He was born in Alsask, SK, on May 11, 1934. School, work, married life and parenthood took place in Mantario, except for high school, which he completed in Kindersley, and was a resident of the dormitory. On July 27, 1963, Paul married Marjorie Huber, formerly from Scott, SK. On November 18, 1964, they welcomed their son, Noel, and on December 31, 1966, their daughter, Angela, was born.
If you couldn`t find Paul working within the walls of Hammerlindl Garage, alongside his brother, Allen, and (beginning in 1981) Noel, he was delivering fuel to farmyards and fields as the local Esso agent, following in his father`s footsteps. He enjoyed his work as much as he enjoyed the discussions held in the front section of the garage, where many long-time customers and friends would discuss and debate whatever the hot topic of the day happened to be. Paul usually contributed with a joke, and the room would be filled with chuckles. It was a sad day for him when he shut the garage door for good.
In May of 2006, Paul and Marjorie moved to Saskatoon, SK. Noel had passed away in January of 2004, and it was only a matter of time before they moved to be closer to their daughter, and her family. The community came together for a farewell celebration, not only for Paul and Marjorie, but also for his brother, Allen, and his wife, Kay, who had earlier moved to Saskatoon. There is nothing like the community of `Small Town`, SK!
In Saskatoon, Paul and Marjorie were better known as `Grandpa (Grampito) and Grandma (GamGam)` to Kylen and Lindsay. Once the girls were in school, Grandpa would pick them up on Thursdays and bring them to the condo until Angela was done work. Thursday was a highlight for all involved!
From the condo, Paul and Marjorie moved into a retirement community (The Bentley), which meant no longer preparing their own meals, but living with many more residents. They enjoyed making new friends in both the condo, and the retirement community. However, aging isn`t necessarily simple, and Marjorie eventually required more assistance than Paul was able to provide. She moved into a small personal care home, but wasn`t very happy there, so she moved again into an establishment very similar to the retirement community, with the addition of 24-hour personal and medical assistance, as required.
In the meantime, Paul was beginning to have his own medical issues. He saw a number of specialists, most of whom couldn`t find anything unusual. He was diagnosed with a rare skin disorder which required strong medication to get under control. In May of this year, Paul also agreed to move into Stonebridge Crossing, although into his own suite. It was a good move for him however his health began to seriously decline shortly after arriving there. Approximately two weeks before his death, while in St. Paul`s Hospital, mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the lung, caused by exposure to asbestos) was discovered. Paul was in palliative care for less than two days before he passed. Kylen and Lindsay had just arrived to visit him. Grampito had waited for his granddaughters.
Mourning his loss is Paul`s wife of 57 years, Marjorie; their daughter, Angela Rioux, her husband, Sheldon, and their daughters, Kylen (19) and Lindsay (17). Surviving Paul is his sister-in-law, Winnie, and Marjorie`s siblings, John, Philip (Mary), Gerald (Arlene), Bill (Joh-Anna), Melvin (Elaine), sisters-in-law Lois, Arla, Pat, and Faye; brother-in-law Rudy, and many nieces and nephews.
Paul was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Margaret, his brothers Harold, Allen (Kay) and Jim (Carol); Marjorie`s sisters Wilma (Milton) Hartsook, Laverna (Howard) Francis, Marie (Marcel) Gosselin, and Frances Weber; her brothers Carl, Ed, Jim, Rudy, David, and George; his nephews Kent Huber, Dustin Theissen, and Don Hammerlindl; and his nieces Lisa Huber and Kathleen Huber. The death of his son, Noel, was especially difficult. However, Paul handled his grief with dignity and faith.
Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to the staff at Stonebridge Crossing, and to the staff at St. Paul`s Hospital. Your care and compassion are blessings.
A private Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, September 25, 2020, at 10:30 a.m., at Holy Spirit Parish. Interment at Kindersley Cemetery will take place in Summer of 2021. Arrangements in care of Ashley Knash – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
