Obituary
We are incredibly sad to announce the passing of Patricia Lynn Verrier (nee-Schmidt) peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta on December 11, 2020 at the age of 75. Her family was at her bedside when she left us to rest in the arms of the Lord. Special thanks go to all of the ICU doctors and nurses at FMC (Pod “C”).
Pat was predeceased by her father Connie Schmidt, mother Ina Schmidt (nee Hyslop), brother David Schmidt and sister-in-law Yvette Zemcak (Joseph). She is survived by her loving husband Maurice; daughters Diana Verrier and Kim Verrier (Barry Station); brothers Greg Schmidt (Julie) and John Schmidt (Marilyn), sister-in-law Bobbi Schmidt; brother-in-law Marcel Verrier (Kerry); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Pat was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on VE day, May 8, 1945. After high school, she trained at St Boniface Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. Pat later went back to school to enhance her education in the area of Public Health. On June 10, 1967, Pat married Maurice and they spent 53 happy years together.
Pat and Maurice lived in various neighborhoods in Winnipeg while raising their daughters before settling in East St. Paul, Manitoba. Pat loved this home where they had a pool and a garden that looked like a park. It was a private oasis that brought joy and comfort and many parties and car rallies throughout the years.
After living their entire life in Winnipeg, Pat and Maurice embarked on a new adventure west and moved to Calgary, Alberta in 2009 to be closer to their daughters. They jumped in with both feet and got involved with their church, delivered hampers to those in need, and provided church services to those in nursing homes. They also spent many Christmases in Banff and summer vacations in the Shuswap and Sicamous, British Columbia with their daughters, son-in-law, and furry grandchildren (cats and dogs).
It is often said that happiness comes from serving others and this might explain why Pat was such a happy person. As the only daughter in her family, she took care of her younger brothers after school and tried to keep them out of mischief. She served the health needs of her community as a public health nurse and was always there for her husband and children, giving them a loving home and ensuring all their needs were met. Pat served her church as a parish worker and youth group leader and she served God, with whom she always had a special relationship. Pat’s life was always about service and, in her later years, she provided inspiration and spiritual guidance to anyone who asked and even to some who didn’t ask. Pat lifted the spirits of everyone she met and truly made a difference in this world; she will no doubt make an impact in heaven.
Pat’s strength was apparent as she fought and survived cancer. Her gratitude was never-ending for Dr. Anthony MacLean at FMC, his assistant Tracy, and Dr. Diana Yee.
Pat was a dearly loved wife, mother, and sister. She will always be in our hearts and her spirit will live on in each of us. We will miss her greatly and look forward to seeing her again on the other side.
Cremation has already taken place and a celebration of life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to two charities close to Pat’s heart: the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS Calgary) or the Alberta Cancer Foundation (Tom Baker Cancer Centre).
