Obituary
McKAY, Olga
July 2, 1930 – November 20, 2020
Olga’s family is sad to announce her peaceful passing on November 20 at Central Haven Special Care Home. She was born in Northern Valley, AB to Jakob and Justyna (Edna) Wolynec.
Once Mom moved to Saskatoon, she worked at Intercontinental Meat Packers. This is where she met Everit (Mac) and were married in 1956. She took a few years off to raise their 5 children, then went to work at Hudson Bay and then at the Saskatoon Arena. What she loved to do most, was her 40 years of volunteering at Porteous Lodge and Oliver Lodge. Olga was one of the founding members of the Mount Royal United Church and part of the United Church Women (UCW).
Mom enjoyed many hobbies and handcrafts during the winter months, such as painting Ukrainian eggs, crochet and knitting. Her biggest passion was her garden, and a huge garden it was. There was always enough to last them a year and enough to supply all her kids! In between all the gardening, she took time out to go fishing at Delaronde Lake. Mom did not fish, but she enjoyed her time at the campsite. Most campers would have wieners for a meal, but not for us! Mom could make a feast off that camp stove. Things like homemade fries and perogies. Kaiser and Rummy were her card games of choice.
Never was there a time where you could walk into her house and she wouldn’t be making something in her kitchen. Perogies, cabbage rolls cakes or cookies were just some of the many items she would make. She was always cooking something with the help of Mac reading the recipe or assisting wherever she asked him to.
Born of Ukrainian/Polish ancestry, Mom was very proud of her heritage. She spoke fluent Ukrainian and put on her traditional Christmas Eve feast every year.
Olga is survived by her children Brian (Linda), Val, Doug (Cheryl) and Alan; grandchildren Katie (Joe), Christopher (Krissy); and 3 great-grandchildren Myles, William, Walter; brother Peter Wolynec; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Olga was predeceased by her husband Everit (2017); son Terry (2005); and granddaughter Heather (1993).
A Private Graveside Service was held and officiated by Reverend Joan Brown of Mount Royal Emmanuel United Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mom’s name to the Mount Royal Emmanuel United Church, 521 Vancouver Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK S7L 4J8.
Our family would like to thank all the staff of Central Haven Special Care Home for taking care of Mom, Reverend Joan Brown for her assistance and guidance and David Schurr of Mourning Glory Funeral Services for taking care of the arrangements.
