Obituary of Nancy Rita Theresa Brooks
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nancy Rita Theresa Brooks who died peacefully at the Sus Health Centre on Thursday, July 30th, 2020. Wife of the late Harry Brooks and a daughter of the late John and Sarah (Cunningham) Abbott, Nancy was born in Saint John on May 22, 1936.
Nancy’s mother Sarah died when she was only 3 months old. She spent her childhood in Saint John under the care of several loving relatives and her stepmother Edna Mae Clements. As a girl, Nancy loved walking throughout her city, ice skating in the winter, playing with her school mates, and spending time with her older siblings. She attended Saint Vincent’s High School and later became a clerk, cashier, and office worker for Emerson Bros. She would also go on to work as a secretary for Jasper Place Separate School Board in Alberta later.
She met the love of her life, Harry Jesse Brooks in Saint John and they married on July 16th, 1954. Following their marriage, Nancy and Harry began an epic journey travelling across North America, living and working in Quebec, British Columbia, Ontario, Nova Scotia, California, Kentucky, West Virginia, Alabama, and Massachusetts before finally settling again in New Brunswick in 1974.
Nancy was a devoted mother and homemaker to her husband and four children, creating a warm and loving home no matter where they were residing. She was strong-willed, determined, and passionate about her values and beliefs. She was a voracious reader and believed so strongly in the power and importance of literacy that she gave 30+ years of faithful volunteer service to the Sus Regional Library and was a strong supporter and volunteer with NB Literacy for many years. She was a member of Geri-Fitness Sus and greatly enjoyed practicing tai chi and line dancing. When she unexpectedly lost her beloved husband Harry, she was instrumental in creating a grief support group in her community. She was equally devoted to her grandchildren, hosting many lively family dinners, sleep overs, and visits. She never forgot birthdays or special events in the lives of her large extended family.
Nancy will live on in the hearts of her four children, Kristopher Brooks (Lorraine) of Edmonton, AB, Kristina Johnson (Kevin) of Clarendon, NB, Rosanna Armstrong (Dwayne) of Apohaqui, NB, and Rupert Brooks (Isabelle) of Montreal, QC, her sister Shirley Milam, her grandchildren Jesse, Jordan, Dustin, Adam, Hannah (David), Noah, Kristopher (Rachel), Tabatha (François Guy), Melissa and her great-grandchildren, Leah, Jaden, & Jacob, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
She is pre-deceased by her husband Harry, her parents, her two brothers and two sisters, their spouses, her brother-in-law Thomas Milam, several nieces and nephews, and her grandson Aaron Johnson.
