Obituary of Nancy Nash Day
Day, Nancy Nash
May 21, 1939 – January 4, 2020
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Nancy Nash Day (nee Wood, formerly Foster). She passed away peacefully after a long illness, surrounded by family.
Nancy was born May 21, 1939 to Florence and Joseph Wood and grew up in Bradford Ontario. She graduated from Queen’s University in 1961. It was at Queen’s that she fell in love with Kingston.
Nancy cut her teeth in municipal politics as a member of the Association of Women Electors and the Ratepayers Association when Kingston was developing its official plan and zoning by-laws. She was an early supporter of the Frontenac Historic (now Heritage) Foundation, and served on the Foundation’s property committee which purchased a number of threatened properties for restoration.
In 1972 Nancy was elected Alderwoman in Sydenham Ward. Nancy loved politics, running many successful election campaigns, including for Flora MacDonald MP, Keith Norton MPP and Helen Cooper’s mayoral campaign.
Nancy was an early and passionate environmentalist. She was President of the Cataraqui Conservation Foundation during the time when one million dollars was raised to build the Outdoor Centre located on Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area.
Nancy had a successful career, starting with Richardson Greenshields in 1981 finally retiring as Vice President from RBC Dominion Securities in August 2008.
Nancy and her husband Philip loved to travel, especially visiting family in England, Australia and the Cayman Islands
Nancy had many friends and colleagues. Heartfelt thanks to them for their love and care in her final illness and a shout-out to the cell sisters for their years of friendship.
Nancy is survived by her devoted husband Philip as well as her four children, Christopher Foster (Jessica), Eleanor Rogers (Brent), Charles Foster, and Morley Foster (Jane). She was pre-deceased by her brothers John Wood and Dave Wood, and is survived by her much-loved sister Jane Schlechter. Nancy is also mourned by Philip’s sons Jon (Alyson), Clinton (Becky) and Andrew, and Phil’s sisters Sue (Rob) and Joyce (Elizabeth). She leaves her beloved grandchildren Oliver, Eliot, Moran, Gabe, Kennedy, Anna, Lewis, Will, and Cameron.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm on Sunday January 12, 2020 in the JAMES REID FUNERAL HOME, 1900 John Counter Blvd, Kingston, Friends will be received during a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority (CRCA) would be much appreciated.
