It is with great sadness that the family of Muriel Elizabeth Palmer, announces her passing at the Moosomin Long Term Care facility. Mom passed away very peacefully on September 19th, 2020 at the age of 96.
Muriel was born on August 20th, 1924, on the family farm in the Hillburn District near Rocanville, Sk. She was the second oldest child in a family of eight. Muriel attended grade school at Hillburn, then went on to earn her teaching certificate at the Teachers’ College in Regina. Over a span of 5 1/2 years, Muriel taught school in five districts, Byron, Coverdale, Carnoustie, Hillburn and Cambridge.
In 1947, Muriel married, Dutchie (Wellington Henry) Palmer. They raised two sons, Murray and Vernon.
Mom worked hard, all her life. Besides raising her two boys, she helped Dad out at the oil wells, was a caretaker for an apartment building, and was still able to have a delicious home cooked meal on the table and ready to share with anyone that happened to pop by. Every one was always welcome in her home and you never left Mom’s table hungry. There was always a chocolate cake and German buns in the fridge, her cookie jars were never empty and her cold storage room was always stocked with home made jams, pickles and fruit preserves.
Family was the most important part of Mom’s life. She loved us all unconditionally. She was continuously helping her elderly mother, aunts and uncles. Our family gatherings were always large, Mom never wanted to see a family member alone on a special occasion.
When her two boys were married, she welcomed her new daughters into her life with love and affection. Mom’s grand and great grandchildren were such a joy to her. We never remember a family gathering, when her arms were not open for snuggles and hugs.
Mom loved gardening. She had always said, “that’s where I want to die, laying out in my garden, dirty as a little pig”. She would spend hours in her beautiful back yard and garden, tending her flowers, collecting her fruit and and picking all the weeds between her vegetables. Her freezers and cold room were packed with all the bounty.
Mom also loved sewing and quilting. She always found time to sew her young boys clothes. Sometimes the material came from old discarded clothes and sometimes it would be enough store bought material to make a three piece suit.
Over the years, Mom volunteered for numerous groups and was a lifetime member of the Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary. It was just another way of Mom helping others.
Throughout her life, Mom taught us fairness, humility and love. She instilled in us a strong work ethic that we have been proud to follow and even prouder to pass on to our children.
Mom once wrote that she wanted to be remembered for “just being a good Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother”.
Mom, thank you for your unconditional caring and commitment to family. We are so proud and thankful that we were part of yours. You will always remain in our hearts as being the best Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother ever.
Muriel will be lovingly remembered by her two sons Murray and wife Dena and Vernon and wife Jona; her grandchildren Aaron and wife Darci; Mikki; Clayton and wife Lisa and Tiffany; and her Great Grandchildren Rayna, Gavin, Ruby, Gunner, Beckett and Skye.
Muriel is also survived by her brother Delmer and wife Jean and sister Lois.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
For those wishing to remember Muriel, a donation to the Moosomin Long Term Care Recreation Department would be gratefully accepted. Cheque’s can be made payable to SEICC Long Term Care Recreation – P.O. Box 1470 Moosomin, Saskatchewan S0G 3N0
