Muriel Connors
1933 ~ 2020
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Muriel Connors of Scoudouc Road, on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at the Dr. Georges L. Dumont University Hospital in Moncton, NB. Emma Muriel Murray (87) was born in Shediac Cape, NB, the daughter of the late Roy and Jessie (Stright) Murray.
She is survived by her six children: Charles (Sharon) of Scoudouc Road, Robb (Dorothy) of Salisbury, Peggy of Shediac Cape, Brian of Scoudouc Road, Cathy (Bob Kennedy) of Fredericton, and Kim (Bill Buterman) of Red Deer, Alberta. She is also survived by two sisters: Helen Bateman, Erminie Mollins (Leigh); her brother, John Murray (Anne) and brother-in-law, Jim Mollins. Lovingly referred to as “Grammie Moo”, she had a special relationship with each and every one of her 12 grandchildren: Jessica (Mario Robichaud), Katie Magee (Josh), Emily (Travis Welling), Becky (Mathieu Gallant), Laura LeBlanc (Zach), Caden (Kayla McNally), Tommi (Nick Leslie), George Kennedy, Randi Gallagher (Matthew), Patricia Kennedy, Connor Krebs (Shayla Radtke) and Heidi Krebs (Francesco Mariani). In addition, she leaves behind 9 great-grandchildren who called her “Grammie Moo Moo”: Sophia and Ava Robichaud, Harper and Amelia Gallagher, Elizabeth and Liam Magee, Landon LeBlanc, Charli Gallant and Hailey Welling. “Aunt Moomie” will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Family meant the world to Muriel.
Muriel was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Joseph Charles Connors, in 2011; her sister, Sylvia Anne Mollins, in 2019; her brother-in-law, Bert Bateman and sisters-in-law: Mary (James) Leonard, Rita (Vincent) Hickey and Bernadette (Arthur) McKendy.
She was the eldest of 5 children: Muriel, Helen, Sylvia Anne (“Annie”), John and Erminie (“Minnie”); she loved her sisters and brother dearly. All five siblings married and raised their families in the Shediac Cape area; together they parented 24 children. Muriel felt privileged to always have her sisters and brother nearby throughout her life; in their senior years for more than 20 years, they dined together in a local restaurant every Thursday evening.
Muriel loved learning. In her early years she was an outstanding student, accelerating through grades and finishing high-school at the age of 16. She attended “Teachers’ College” in Fredericton and always spoke fondly of her friends and experiences there. At the age of 17, she became the teacher of the one-room school on Dorchester Road. She also taught in Moncton and Dorchester before becoming principal of the Pointe- du-Chêne School. Later in life, she liked to share stories of the various people in the community who used to be her students.
Muriel loved the Lord and her faith played a huge role in her life. She was baptized at St.-Martin’s-in-the-Woods Anglican Church and remained a loyal parishioner there throughout her 87 years. She served her church by volunteering on many church committees, being a member of ACW and the Ladies Guild, working at the “turkey & goose supper” every year, and reading at the “early church” service every Sunday morning. She had years of volunteering with Girl Guides of Canada, Girls’ Auxiliary, Hospice, School Breakfast Programs and the Canadian Cancer Society, and she was a member of several community groups, such as Silver Sands Seniors, and “the quilters”.
Muriel was known to be a great cook, and for years took home many red ribbons from the Saint Mary’s Agricultural Fair. Her orange squares and bean salad were well-known and served at most events at the Young Smith Hall.
She also enjoyed travel and was quick to accept the opportunity to go anywhere. She travelled by train to Montreal in 1967 to be present for the huge Centennial Year Celebration of our country, known as “Expo 67”. Some of her other adventures included driving to Alberta with Kim and her children in their motorhome, shopping in the States with Minnie and Leigh, going to Scotland with her “Sheep Farmers’ Wives” group and going on a cruise with her three daughters.
Muriel’s neighbours were some of her closest friends, and she loved to go out to lunch to celebrate birthdays with Sharon, Shelia, Pauline, Barb & her other lady friends. Muriel loved to read novels, peruse cookbooks, listen to Stuart McLean stories, do the puzzles in the newspaper (especially the crossword) and play solitaire on the computer.
Family gatherings were important to her; all four generations would gather in her home for Easter, Mothers’ Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve & Boxing Day and in Peggy’s home for Muriel’s birthday. Muriel’s sister, Helen, and close friend, Joan Harvey, were also included in many of these special gatherings.
Family & friends were everything to Muriel. She sincerely cared about everyone and knew almost everyone’s birthday. Muriel enjoyed her life. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Guests are mandated to wear masks (please bring your own) when attending public visitation at Passage Funeral Co-operative in Shediac Bridge on Wednesday, Aug 19th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. With Covid-19 restrictions in place, a Celebration of Life service will be limited to only immediate and extended family on Thursday, Aug 20th at 2 pm at St. Martin’s-in-the-Woods Anglican Church, Shediac Cape. The service will be streamed and can be viewed live on the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/PassageFH/ for all others to participate from home. (Click on link to access page). The service will also remain available on Passage Facebook page following the service. Burial will follow at St. Martin’s-in-the-Woods Anglican Church Cemetery.
