With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of Mildred Cook, with her family at her side, on December 8, 2020 due to complications from COVID-19. A caring and generous wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Mildred will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Mildred was predeceased by her father Metro, mother Mary (nee Gorda), stepmother Marion (nee Smart), and brother David.
Mildred was born in Poplar Park, MB on April 21, 1951. She attended grades 1 through 8 at Poplar Park School (a one-room schoolhouse where she was the only student in her grade), and then attended Selkirk Collegiate for grades 9 through 12. After graduation, Mildred moved to Winnipeg and worked for the provincial government for several years. She met Rick in 1978, and they were married in 1981. She was a stay-at-home mom for several years after her sons James and Tyler were born but re-entered the workforce in the early 1990’s where she worked in the offices for several organizations. She worked for Acklands-Grainger for the last several years before retiring in the mid-2000s. After Rick retired, they spent their time traveling, taking bus trips to places such as Yellowstone Park and Las Vegas.
Mildred loved her family. Her grandchildren were the lights of her life – she loved to spend time with them and have talks with them. She and Rick would take them to the zoo, have sleepovers, and she loved to prepare Sunday supper with them. She would sometimes spend hours and hours looking for just the right gift for them for their birthdays, or Christmas – which she would always find.
Mildred leaves behind her husband of 39 years, Rick; her sons James (Erin) and Tyler; grandchildren Liam and Finleigh; sister Margaret (Lawrie); brother Ernie (Jeanine); as well as her aunts, her nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Family dinners just won’t be the same without her.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at the Grace and St. Boniface Hospitals in Winnipeg for their exceptional and gentle care for Mildred during her time there.
In accordance with Mildred’s wishes, there will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Siloam Mission or to a charity of your choice in Mildred’s name.
