Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Thomas Michael Bell (Mike) announces his unexpected passing on May 13, 2020 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was the son of the late Judge Thomas Bell and Patricia Bell (Blayney). Although he was born in Ottawa, Mike was a lifelong active member of the Saint John community and had just celebrated his 61st birthday on May 2nd.
Following his graduation from Millidgeville North High School in 1978, Mike attended NBCC, then went to work at NB Power’s Courtenay Bay facility. He would later transfer to Coleson Cove and eventually retire after 20 years of service. Mike never allowed Muscular Dystrophy to get in the way of his independence. He remained in his own home until his passing. Whether it was moving from one house to a more suitable one, Mike was always one step ahead of the progressing limitations that came with having MD.
Mike was an incredibly social person who travelled throughout the city daily to meet with his wide circle of friends who were always inspired by his positive attitude. They loved him dearly and it showed. He was an Amateur Radio enthusiast who also enjoyed the Sea Dogs games. Mike was always as supportive with others as they were with him. He served for several years as President of the local Muscular Dystrophy Chapter as well as the Chapter Firefighter Liaison. He co-chaired the Annual MD Walk and was also Chair of the Board of Options Outreach for many years.
Mike is survived by brothers James and Andrew Bell, both of Saint John, as well as his sister Melanie Bell Hughes (John) of Rothesay, and beloved godson Thomas Walton of Quispamsis. Mike also had an extended family including many cousins which he enjoyed staying in touch with.
Due to the current restriction on gatherings, a celebration of Mike’s life will be held at a later time.
