Obituary
Peacefully, at her home in Southampton on Wednesday, April 15, 2020 in her 91st year. Masie, beloved mother of David Farrell, Andrew Farrell and his wife Daphne, Marian Farrell-Henry, Aaron Farrell and his wife Linda, Joan and her husband Steve Winnett, Bill Farrell, Helen, and her husband Andrew Mills, Joyce Farrell, and Ivan Farrell and his wife Susan. Proud grandmother of Adam, Jennifer, Mark, Shannon, Andrew, Jody-Lynn, Matthew, Shawn, Irelande, Brent, Brendan, Kristen, Tavis, and Oshia, and great grandmother of eleven. Mom’s life was a difficult one and she lived through trying times, right up until her excruciatingly painful illness at 90 years old that she eventually succumbed to. Nevertheless, she was a strong woman who never gave up and was always so positive in “making do”. She was born at the start of the Depression in Bishop’s Falls, Newfoundland and lived through World War II. Despite these difficult times and with very little in terms of material wealth, she stated many times and wrote in her memoirs that those were “the best time of my life” where, although she didn’t have much, she “made her own fun”. She often regaled us with stories from that era, stories that we will treasure and regularly tell our children. Moreover, she always had a smile or joke to tell with her witty sense of humour, and her acts of kindness and caring for others brought so much joy to those she knew. Along with her kindness, Mom would also give of the very little she had to others, and regularly sent money to the grandkids in letters she wrote. Those letters, which she sent to many, have always been a source of comfort, in addition to laughter with the jokes she often included in them. Mom’s home was always so peaceful and relaxing, a respite from the hectic pace of the world where she would feed anyone who stopped by and offer her couch or bed to “get a rest”. Always providing comfort and words of wisdom concerning problems we were facing; she had a keen sense of others and was so poignantly accurate in her assessment of situations. Mom also had an incredible faith in God, which carried her through many difficult times, and she was never afraid of dying, only that we were doing well and would continue to do so.
We would like to thank Dr. Marriott for his kindness and expertise in caring for Mom over the years as her doctor. She thought so much of him and looked to his knowledge to guide her, especially through her illness; feeling special that he always came to see her at her home. We would also like to thank the pain management team, Dr. Chapman, the Care Partner nurses, and the whole South West LHIN team, who were in daily contact or came to the house everyday to care for Mom during her last days. They were professional, but most importantly, caring and compassionate in ensuring Mom was as comfortable as she could be, and she would always brighten up when they came to see her. We would also like to thank all of her children for the support, caring, and love they gave to Mom before and during this time. We are particularly grateful to Marian, whose expertise as a PSW was invaluable in assisting Mom over the years, and her selflessness in taking time off work to look after her mother full time in the end, was instrumental in enabling Mom to fulfill her goal of dying at home, surrounded by her family until she went to meet the Lord.
The lessons we have learned from Mom, her incredible strength, caring, faith, and perseverance was a blessing to those who knew her and will be sorely missed. We are grateful however, for those qualities that she instilled in us; and in teaching our children, Mom’s legacy will endure forever.
