Marjorie “Marge” was born in Willowbrook, Saskatchewan on March 10, 1929. She moved to Rose Valley a few years later, where she attended Bradgate School. Marge went to a lot of barn dances, which is where she met William Kowalyk, her future husband. They were married on July 17, 1949 and settled on farming in the Hubbard area. Mom embraced life on the farm and worked hard on growing a huge garden, baking countless loaves of delicious bread and together with dad, raising their four children. In 1977, mom was hired as a postmistress in Hubbard, where she would work for 25 years. In 1980, mom and dad left the farm and moved into Hubbard, where she became active in the Hubbard community by involving herself with Meals On Wheels, social club activities, curling, her postmistress position and even holding the prestigious title of town mayor. Mom was a prankster too, as she once dressed up as a gorilla for Halloween and went trick or treating, while in her 60s.
Nobody knew who this short gorilla was as she only grunted as she shook her treat bag. After she retired she still enjoyed gardening, baking and visiting with family and friends. She always looked forward to her twice-a-year trip to the Sky Dancer Casino, in Belcourt, North Dakota.
Her love of cooking brought family together and even in her 90’s she could still cook huge, delicious feasts, where no one left hungry. After 91 years of life, mom left us with a legacy that we’ll always cherish. Thanks a million MOM! Till we meet again, we love you and will miss you dearly.
