Obituary
Dear Family and Friends. On Christmas morning, December 25th, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend Mario Serpico passed away peacefully at the age of 94 years.
Mario was born November 4, 1926 in a small metropolitan city called Scisciano near Naples, Italy. He was born to a large family which included 9 brothers and sisters born of Mariano and Teresa Serpico. He served in the Italian Military as a young man during WWII and immigrated to Canada through Halifax September 29, 1960. Mario came west to Calgary via train with $10 in his pocket where he met his beautiful and wonderful wife Antonia or “Toni” as he called her. Through most of his life she was his rock, his strength his friend and his true love. They were married for over 60 years.
Mario was a man who liked to live simply but worked hard to provide for his family and was generous to a fault. For almost 30 years he worked in the service industry at The Calgary Golf and Country Club. Mario loved his work and was exceptional at it. He was known to everyone and was always in demand because of his knowledge and his skill. They often said that the CGCC was a bar that had a golf course. In large part to Mario and his gift as a bartender.
Some of Mario’s passions were his twin children Maria and Mariano, his garden, enjoying Antonia’s homemade meals, making homemade wine, time with close family and friends and singing old Italian songs to anyone who would listen.
After he retired, one of Mario’s greatest joys was time spent playing with his grandchildren while they grew up. He is known as a legend at playing Hide and Seek by his grandkids. The greatest gift was being able to have them so close by.
Mario is predeceased by his mother and father as well as all 9 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife Antonia Girardi Serpico; his daughter Maria; his son Mariano (Rose); and his grandchildren Madi (Griff), Josh (Erin), and Jake.
His kind beautiful sensitive heart will be missed by many.
