Marilyn’s Obituary
ATKINSON, Marilyn Elva – 94, of Newellton, Shelburne County, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2020 at Roseway Hospital. Born in Clark’s Harbour on October 18, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Havelock and Elva (Crowell) Cox. At a very young age, Marilyn moved to Boston with her family, where she excelled in school, graduating at the age of 16. They often traveled back to Clark’s Harbour during the summers to visit family. During one of these visits, at the age of 15, she met and became acquainted with Carl Vernon Atkinson of Newellton. Marilyn started working at the age of 16 at The New England Trust Co., where she received several promotions. She was a nursery school teacher at the church she attended in Boston and was also a member of the junior choir. Marilyn then moved back to Clark’s Harbour where she married the love of her life, Carl, on June 5, 1949. Marilyn was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She loved to spend time with her family and friends, but especially enjoyed her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were the apple of her eye. Marilyn enjoyed attending her granddaughters’ softball games and was very proud of all of their accomplishments. On a nightly basis, she enjoyed keeping in touch with her sister. She was a lady with strong Christian values, lived life to the best of her ability and instilled this in the lives of her children. She attended the Clark’s Harbour United Baptist “Stone” Church for many years. She would often be found at the cottage or taking strolls on the beach. She performed bookkeeping functions and managed the finances of Carl’s fishing business for his entire career. She is survived by her children, Lynne Atkinson of Newellton and C. Stuart Atkinson (Anita) of Bible Hill; granddaughters, Stephanie Atkinson (Geoff), Corinne Hoffman (Jason) and Jolyn Baker (Jason); great grandchildren, Kyara Hoffman, Brody Hoffman, Tenley Baker and Maddux Baker; sister, Maureen Stafford of Holden, Massachusetts; niece, Wendy Stafford; several nieces, nephews and cousins from her American family and the Atkinson family. Besides her parents, Marilyn was predeceased by her husband, Carl Vernon Atkinson; infant brothers, Laurie, Havelock and Roger Cox; brother-in-law, Kenneth Stafford; nephews, Roger, K. Thomas and Mark Stafford; sisters-in-law, Yola Nickerson, Flora Atkinson and Vera Simonds. Arrangements have been entrusted to H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington. Interment was in the Oakvale Cemetery, Clark’s Harbour. There will be a memorial service held on July 30, at 2 pm, at the Clark’s Harbour United Baptist “Stone” Church, with Pastor Robb Hunt officiating. It is requested that there be family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Clark’s Harbour United Baptist “Stone” Church, Roseway Hospital or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be sent to huskilson@ns.aliantzinc.ca or you may sign the guest book at www.huskilson.net.
We will always love you and miss you, Mom/Grandma/Great-Grandma.
