RILEY, Marie Catherine
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Marie announces her passing on October 16,
2019, in her 88 th year. The family rejoices in the knowledge that Marie lived her retired
years her way and passed away peacefully. Marie leaves behind her five children, Janet
Riley, Frank Riley, Dorothy Kawaguchi (Kevin), Louise Lachowskyj (Michael) and Bruce
Riley. “Nana” leaves behind her four adoring grandchildren, Catherine and Michael
Lachowskyj, Emily Kawaguchj and Spencer Hughes. They will miss her warped sense of
humour and her unconditional love, which was always readily available to all. Marie will
also be missed by sister and brother-in-law Yvonne and Brian Booth, many nieces and
nephews, good friend Doreen Smith and wonderful neighbours Chris and Alice Chisolm.
Predeceased by her husband Alan Riley (1982), parents James and Esther Tenpenny,
sibilings Rita (Jack) Keigher and Ron (Gwen) Tenpenny. Predeceased by companion Don
Ainsworth. Marie was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England, met and married Alan, then
soon immigrated to Canada. Alan and Marie became the proprietors of Brantford
Monuments in 1965, working side by side until the untimely death of Alan at the age of
56. Marie, with her strength continued to operate the business until the age of 72.
Marie was most happy at her haven, the cottage at Long Point, where for 47 years she
enjoyed watching her children, then grandchildren swimming, digging and playing on
the beach. The family would like to thank the staff at Tranquility Retirement Home and
caregivers for the compassionate and attentive care given to Marie over the past 2
years. A celebration of life will be held at the Charing Cross Reception Suites adjacent to
the TOLL FUNERAL HOME, 55 Charing Cross St., Brantford on Saturday, December 7 th ,
2019 from 1:00-3:00pm. Words from the family will start at 1:00pm. Private interment
at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA or Salvation Army.
